From Geoff's trip report...

Rime and Reason/Upper East Fall were groomed out and pretty firm considering the low temperatures and low humidity over the last few days. Rime had some snowmaking golf balls. Upper Double Dipper had big whales on it and the surface to skier's right of the whales was fine.

Downdraft Headwall opened at 10:30. I skied it a couple of times. It was pretty slick. You could hold on it.... barely... but not exactly the chalky talcum powder surface I was hoping for. I don't have a sense for whether skier traffic will break up the glaze layer. I presume they'll put a winch cat on it at some point.

Mouse Trap was by far the best surface. It was getting minimal traffic so it stayed soft the whole time I was doing laps off the K1.

Lower Bunny Buster is also groomed out and pretty firm with guns going on it. The mix was pretty wet.

They're blowing Highline, Skyelark-to-Highroad-to-Bittersweet, Mouse Run under the Snowdon Triple, and the training slope next to it. I imagine East Fall is next.

Beware:
Obey the sign that tells you to remove your skis before entering the maze for the K1. They put down white granite chunks in the maze this fall and they're invisible when mixed into the snow.

Based on the pictures posted yesterday, this is not what I was hoping for. Thankfully I brought my burly ice Knar (not just gnar, K-nar) skis just in case....they'll get some wax tonight.

Maybe we'll see some soft resurfacing through the rest of the week, but if i was a day tripper, I'd be headed to Mount Snow instaid....sounds like they are going to have a much better skiing surface.

Softest manmade Killington opening I can remember was Thanksgiving day 2006....

Mouse Trap and to skier's right of the whales on upper Double Dipper were the only quality snow on the hill. Everything else is "base snow", not chalky talcum powder. Rime, Upper East Fall, and lower Bunny are all quite firm. Rime has groomer golf balls on it. After the great job they did last year getting the air/water mix right, it was a disappointing skiing surface considering how cold it has been.

Don't ski into the K1 maze unless you're wearing your brother's worst rock skis. Killington put down jagged chunks of white marble stone which blend in perfectly with the snow. It looks covered but it isn't.

What, am I talking to myself here???

Mouse trap and Upper Dipper are like 100 yards long each. Less than 10% of their open terrain. So the rest is ice.....great....

I saw Geoff's report. Base building makes sense early season. I would not be surprised by a groom and a re-surface soon. Let it get skied out a day or two.

There wasn't any ICE. Highwaygnar. Just very solid packed powder. As the day went on the surface conditions got better with the traffic. Snow under the guns was great. Good possibility of Upper and Lower Bittersweet, Upper and Lower Skylark and Highroad as early as Friday! It was great to get out there today. The snowmaking assault their putting on is redonkulous. Tons of terrain is going to open up for this weekend.

GSS, what are you doing to that poor dead horse in your avatar? Should Catherine the Great be jealous?
