Just on my way home from Mt .Snow. We got a somewhat late start as we stopped at Dot's for breakfast on the way up. On the chair by 10 or so. Conditions were REALLY good. Soft snow everywhere. We skied all over the mountain, perhaps the only bad run was down to the Sunbrook area, there were huge patches of slow snow, you'd get cranking and it was like someone threw on the brakes.

North Face was awesome ROTD was Fallen Timbers, musta hit that one 5 or 6 times easy. Sun was out most of the day, very warm, we both switched to lighter clothing around noon time.

That snow was heavy, maybe last night's ride had something to do with it, but by 2:00 I needed a break, we ate some lunch outside in the warm sunshine.

After lunch the dark clouds rolled in like some kind of stop action thing on high speed and by 3:00 it was raining lightly. We decided that we were done and left the mountain a little after the rain started. If it was earlier in the season and my legs weren't shot, maybe I'd have pushed to ski in the rain. I was perfectly happy to call it a day (and likely a season).

A guy on the lift said Snow was hoping to make Easter, I dunno about that. I guess there's a lot of snow, but there's also a lot of bare spots and slush (that used to be ice).

Just some random guy on the lift - don't take it as gospel. I'm not as dedicated a skier as many of you, that sounded late to me!

Easter is the absolute bare minimum (okay if it's 80 degrees and sunny between now and then that won't happen ;) ) - that was straight out of Kelly Pawlak's mouth at the passholders meeting last weekend. After Easter they might scale back to weekend only vs. daily operation depending on ticket sales. or even close:eek:. My guess, with a good chance that they'll still have PARKS and maybe even a pipe or 2 open at Carinthia that the drive up park/pipe crew business will be good enough for them to spin the lifts(atleast on weekends) as long as the snow lasts.

This March has been REALLY atypically dry and not too cold either. I wouldn't be too surprised if Mt Snow has too shut down the main face around Easter time. I also agree that they might try to push Carinthia's season further both because of the desire to make a name for Carinthia as the premier freestlye mountain in the East, and because of the huge stockpiles of snow over there (in the form of jumps right now!)

I agree Euler. The figgin kickers on Inferno are HUGE! I'm not advocating that they plow them down. However, if need be, they have a lot of "extra" snow piled up over there.

Jisch,
Sounds like you had a solid day! I'm going to assume you were on Big or Little dipper over at Sunbrook. Those were a little "spotty" on Sunday as well.

Not sure...

It was a stellar day... absolutely loved it.

I'm not 100% sure which trail it was over on Sunbrook side, it was a pretty wide trail, just these weird slow spots that came up with no warning. On the rest of the mountain you could see them coming up and either prepare for them or go around them.

I'm not sure what this says about me (and my son) as skiers, but we don't pay much attention to trail names. For the most part we just haul down the mountain and take random trails if they look good. If we like one we'll hit it again. I rarely look at a trail map. I probably miss out on some stuff that way, but it also allows us to ski and not have to think too much. Jeez that didn't come out right 8)

At the Passholders' meeting last weekend, MS Management did mention they might plow down a trail or two and leave features up on the rest.

I would guess we would see some remnants of snow on Inferno into June if they leave it as is.

Jisch,
My wife and I have been at Mt. Snow for about a season and a half...I'm still learning trail names.

V,
I bet you're right...lots of snow over there!

Inferno and The Gulch via Heavy Metal can certainly go for a while as they've got multiple large piles of snow near the unloading area for Heavy Metal. And heck, with all the snow on Nitro, they can spin that for a while, and even potentially plow down the mini pipe and other features on Mineshaft to keep that entire pod going for a while.

*If* Carinthia turns out to be where the season will end at Mount Snow, what i'd like to see is them keep The Gulch and Nitro as parks and then give Inferno back as a non park trail. At minimum they'll have to shrink the size of the features on Inferno, since theres little to no chance of being able to get enough speed to successfully negotiate those features at their current size in slow, mushy April or later snow..

John,

Sounds like a great day. But I must say . . . this is an incomplete trip report if you don't mention which Dot's you went to (Wilmington or West Dover) and what you ordered (I hope it was a berry based pancake).

Can you fill in the rest of the details?

I had to bring my 9-year old to Dot's last Saturday. We arrive at 5:50 am so we could hit First Tracks at 7:30. We had lunch on Cuzzin's deck and he mentioned he had the best spring skiing day ever. Of course the blue skies and the great conditions didn't hurt

I am always amazed how people do trip reports and can say when the pulled in, when they clicked in, what trail they took first, second and so how, what time them stopped for lunch, etc. I, personally, had a trail map in front of me at the computer for the two trip reports I did! We are like you, don't typically pay much attention to signs. Except to check out specific ones mentioned on other trip reports. :spin:
