2 hours from my house and NYC is 3 1/2 from my house. Make sure if you come that far the snow is good and the weather looks good, because all of the wind for NE comes through notch at times. Not joking. Had the car door slam on my leg one day and decided to go to Loon and it was dead calm.

That was a south wind. When a storm goes west of NH,Cannon will recieve very high south winds from the funneling effect up the notch.Usually not a good scenario for most NE ski areas when a storm tracks westerly.Extremely rare for any wind issues from other directions.

So Cannon is a shorter drive from NYC than Sugarbush?

NYC to Sugarbush=5 hours...

As long as all the planets are aligned.

More than once it took me more than 2 hours just to get out of Manhattan on a Friday afternoon. After a while we started leaving after 9pm. Getting to Vt 4-5 hours later (if you were lucky) for anything south of Sugarbush sucked. This caused me to bail on VT and start skiing at Gore (3.5 from NYC).

Where do you stay near Gore? How's the town/area?

I have a place in North Creek. Route 28 bypasses the main drag so people sometimes miss the town. NC is on an upswing with some new restuarants and places to stay. There used to be a ski/board/bike shop in town but it closed (Cunninghams is still open). The Copperfield Inn (maybe 20 rooms) was closed for the past few years, but it has reopened. There are about 120 townhouses within 2 miles of the area along with a number of vacation homes and many are available to rent. The night life (maybe 3 bars and a new wine bar) is improving.

I now live in North Jersey and can go door to door in a around 3 hours on a Friday night. Coming home on a Sunday night usually takes 15-20 minutes longer. The drive is mostly highway except for the last 20 miles to North Creek. It is a much less intense drive when compared to driving to Mt Snow/Stratton/Okemo/Killington. There also seem to be less weather issues. I have been stuck more than once in Bennington when Rt 9 over Prospect Mtn is closed for sanding. Going up Rt 11/30 up to Bromley/Stratton/Magic has also been closed while they sand the road. I have been going to Gore for more than 20 years and have never had to wait for the roads to be cleared or sanded.

X,

Is Copperfield relatively cheap? Looking for a cheap motel as I plan on exploring Gore this season (Getting an empire card).

Also, what is the coverage generally like Thanksgiving weekend. Currently thinking Mt Snow but may opt for Gore if reasonable terrain available.
Thx

I travel up to Gore from NW NJ in about the same time (3-3 1/2 hr). I stay at a Super 8 motel in Warrensburg, right off of the Northway. From there to the mountain is about 15-20 miles (30-35min) on Rt. 28.

Warrensburg gives access to Lake George Village (10 min) for the restaurants that remain open in winter.

I'd advise against going on Thanksgiving weekend. They won't have much terrain open (maybe 4 trails), and you won't get the full experience at all.

I'd say you should plan a trip in Early march, stay someplace cheap in Lake George or Warrensburg, and leave open the possibility of driving up to Whiteface if the Slides are open.

I do not know about the Copperfield pricing.

Mattchuck is right, I would not ski Thanksgiving. The weather and the Gore budget are usually in the way of good coverage. I have skied amazing conditions in mid Dec. Once the holidays roll around Gore is usually good to go.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding terrain availability.

Still planning on getting an empire card as we go up to WF for Christmas break so I'll be Gore bound sometime mid December for sure.

Also regarding the slides... I'm back into skiing after 15+ year break (i.e., I suck, son# 2 don't though). Slides are whispered about reverently in this household along with Goat, Star etc...... no worries about hitting that. Not happening yet. :spin:

PS thx for the reply too X10003q
