RANGELEY, Maine – This year Saddleback Maine will offer skiers and snowboarders a new glade called Casablanca. It will be the largest glade in the Northeast, with 44 acres of inbound un-groomed tree skiing. The mountain will open its 66th trail, a single black diamond called 'Family Secret.'

Casablanca will offer a challenging double black diamond glade experience, with chutes, steeps, tight lines, and open areas for cruising. There is so much space that skiers and riders will think they have the place to themselves. Locals and employees are excited because they predict there will be “freshies” nearly every day. The on-mountain trail crews also predict that the nature of how the glade lays on the mountain it will catch, keep, and hold large quantities of snow.

“Our latest improvements are designed to capitalize on what makes Saddleback different from other mountains in Maine. The new glade at Saddleback will draw people to the mountain who are eager to get off the groomed trails and experience a high alpine adventure unlike any other in the East,” stated Warren Cook, CEO and general manager of Saddleback Maine. “The terrain and the beauty, complemented by our Saddleback Guest Service, will create an unforgettable experience.”

Saddleback is also introducing two new snow groomers and tillers to the grooming fleet, one of which is an impressive Winch Cat. There will be snowmaking improvements as well.

Saddleback Realty is completing 12 on-mountain condominiums prior to winter as well. The new South Branch condos offer elegant wood frame construction with wood shingle siding, all surrounded by scenic views of the mountains. Still in the works for next season are a new chairlift and an expanded base lodge.

Translated: Locals and employees are pissed that their secret stashes are now on the map for the world to see.

have you been in the area in question? Super tight evergreen forest, unskiable in its natural state.

I'm sure there are a stash or two in those woods, but I doubt many locals are complaining about Saddleback opening things up in there and marketing it.

Normally I'd agree with you, but this an exception. I would bet maybe 1% of Saddleback skiers would not view this glade as a great improvement.

Except from any rain, sleet storm, or thaw-freeze until the next time it snows. I know Saddleback's high, but it's still in New England. Can any regulars give us an estimate on the real percentage of time there'd be freshies, based just on the snow surface? Go ahead and assume it never gets tracked out, that might be possible.

I do not mean to be critical, but the real "problem" in my mind ain't the freeze-thaw, but mid-winter "cold." It can be freakin' freeze-your-eyeballs cold. When it was brought up at our club meeting, the response was, "Yes. So what?"

When the weather is bad (cold, rain, snow:roll:) it ferrets out what NSSA calls the "marginal" skiers, which is another way of saying, "lost revenue." Tough problem.

You're right, it can be very cold...But I know where I head when it's brutally cold and I still want to get turns in....The TREES....May not help revenue but that's the best place to be in freezing temps.

Agreed; me too. But, the money doesn't go in woods. I'm just mentioning a challenge they have to figure out how to overcome. My wife still talks about the cold from her last trip there 25 years ago! Regardless, Saddleback is still a gem.

There have been some improvements in clothing technology in the last 25 years ;-) maybe she could give it another try.

The coldest day I ever experienced was March 3, 2003 at Sugarloaf - brutal - 1 run and done.

I skied in similar weather MLK this year and because I finally smartened up in the clothing dept, I was out almost the entire day. Proper gear is worth it.

uhhh - never mind - you should stay in when its cold.

No, never been. Just with press releases like this the locals usually aren't too crazy if its revealing secret stashes and putting them on the trail map for all to see. Sugarbush is opening up a ton of glades and putting them on the map, and over at skimrv some of the locals were lamenting on losing some stashes.

In this case it sounds like totally new areas, so I'm sure there must be some local stoke...

Yeah well check again you went the wrong way. And besides I am thinking jay and sugarbush both have more than Saddleback of Whiteface.

You're right my mistake....

That's a good point. Does anyone know the answer to that?

The main point here is Saddleback=slow. I haven't been for the last two years but Late season 07 was deep with very very little skier traffic.
