I continually set the bar low, maybe not as low as you, but i'm working on it.

Good topic.

I yelled at my boys once because they were riding up with the bar up. They haven't done it since...

I forget which one, either the vista, burma or main st chairs at Blue. One of them is slippery/slidey as all heck.

Ahem, GSS, you started the same thread two years ago! :-o

Bill...not to be picky...but it seems that "prisnah" started that thread....based on GSS's Best day ever thread.

I always lower the safety bar when there is one. I am pretty scared of heights.....(at least until my tips are pointed downhill on the snow..then I'm fine..). When out west...I'm not too happy with those chairs not having bars.....but that won't stop me from riding them!

I was planning on using my post from that thread here, but then I realized this is essentially the third time for this thread. http://forums.alpinezone.com/48293-vermonts-chairlift-safety-bar-law.html

Though GSS might be prone to memory loss...

I don't see a reason for a law, but I don't understand, for the most part, why people find it so annoying to put the bar down. Outside of situations like rivercOil described, I see no downside of putting it down. Even when the chair has footrests, they're usually high enough up that my feet can still dangle freely, plus they get snowboards up high enough that they don't knock into my skis. Plus I tend to lean on it.

That being said, I'll let the other people on the chair make the move. They want it up, I don't particularly care. There are chairs where it's a little freaky when it stops, though.

always lower the bar. To me it's like riding a motorcycle without a helmet, just a dumb idea an easy safety precaution to take.

I always lower the bar when I'm on the chair with some profanity-spouting, loud mouth bragging, arrogant, dweeb. I wait until their head (or knees) are in just the right spot and bring it down without warning ;)

Well done TB!

No problem Root. We're pretty much volunteer mods, so we do have lives outside of AZ and sometimes we just don't have the time to do everything. Since you asked, and I had a minute, I took a look and made the merge.

bvibert has a wife and two kids to chase after, so he does always have a lot of time for AZ.

I seem to recall posting my opinion in another thread like this and arguing with a bar up nazi.

my preference is for the bar to be down. anyone who thinks that they would have the reaction time to jump from a falling chair is kidding themselves. might make for a good episode of Myth Busters actually.

So to get back on topic...

I always put the lift bar down as I'm usually fiddling with something (mp3 player, snack, water, blueberries) while on the ride back up. Plus, late in the day, my legs really appreciate the foot rest.

It seems to me that the foot rest is a real nuisance for snowboarders. Some folks look down right awkward trying to get situated.
