I continue to support my favorite shop at Sugarbush. While gear can be purchased online for significant savings many times you can buy local at close to online pricing and get proper fitting and service especially for skis and boots. I recently geared up the family for the season at 30-50% savings by buying last years models that were still in stock. I bought a new pair of this years model boots and got an early season/frequent customer additional discount and I have yet to find better pricing available online.
You must know the people in the local store then. Most ski shops I have been in the staff has been condescending to the point I have to laugh at them. Most will oversell any chance they get and justify it by sayin We Have To our season is so short. So much so that i wont use there store for myself when i can get a fair price. IMO ski shops have to start being Fairer with EVERYONE not jus tthe select few they who are lucky enough to live in that environment. Just saying

One of our local ski shops went out of business this year as well. But Jersey ski shops are generally expensive and their service is crap, in my experience...I'd rather order large ticket items off-line and have other services done (mounting, tune-ups, etc...) close to the mountain by more knowledgeable folk.

A local shop here that thas been operating for quite some time randomly closed shop the other day. I went in to grab a pair of bike gloves, got talking to one of the workers a bit and he said, "yeah, so we are closing tomorrow." I didn't really get into it with him. I was bummed because they were awesome people who were skiers before salespeople, if you know what I mean. Would be happy to just talk shop and not try to push product or brands. Gonna miss that place.

The closest Ski Market closed, but there was no sale as the stock just got redistributed to the other shops.

No, it was an independant place. I have no idea what happened to all their inventory.
It is tent sale season, it might have been bought out entirely by a wholesaler.

I guess I am fortunate that I frequent a shop that has very good service and treats everyone well and I have never seen their staff in "oversell" mode. We visited two shops on the same day and at Shop A the sales guy was pushing too hard to unload a pair of skis on my wife that were above her ability and definitely too long. Our shop had the same skis and the sales guy asked a lot more questions about what she really needed for new skis. Rather than push what was on the rack he recommended she come back in December and demo a better ski for her ability and terrain preferences.

Yeah, that sucked. I used to work on Rock Ave...If I was having a bad day, I used to head over there for a bit and drool over the gear.
Personally, I liked their old store better...I wonder what happend that caused them to move, then go out of bussiness a year later.
