According to Cannon's website, they've done some thinning and brush cutting, and will run a weekend/holiday shuttle from Mittersill base to Peabody/Notchview.

MITTERSILL UPDATE...

We’ll open and manage that terrain area this year as a lift-accessed backcountry portion of Cannon’s terrain (via the Tramway and Cannonball Quad).

The trail crew has done some thinning and brush cutting for ease of access, but nothing to change the culture or skiing & riding experience over there. With no snowmaking, limited grooming, very limited patrolling and extensive rescue time, the area will carry a designation of “Extra Hazardous.”

We’ll run a weekend/holiday shuttle service from the base of Mittersill to Peabody/Notchview.

We plan to have the new Mittersill Double Chair installed and operational by mid-late December 2010.

Thanks for the info. A December 2010 deadline for the lift is very interesting given the state of the economy, especially the NH State Budget. 250 state workers lost their jobs last week...not sure the announcement of a new chair will go over too well.

The money for the lift had already been appropriated for some time. The layoffs were a result of their own doing via a stubborn union. They voted for it and the state called their bluff.

Hope to get there a couple times this winter prior to the 'modernization' of Mittersill. I'd imagine that next summer and beyond will see many more aspiring foresters up on the mountain. ;)

twofer one deal on Super Bowl Sunday. According to Google, Cannon is actually 4 minutes closer to Hartford than Sugarbush. just sayin' ;)

I'll be there for that day and if there's a weekend powder day worth the full price, I'll probably go another time. Had a blast skiing there last winter with Johnskismore.

I never really thought about the distance, that's interesting. I have a pretty tight schedule this winter, with a few trips planned already. I'm just not sure if I can pull off Cannon too, I'd like to try though. Maybe one of my extended day trips is in order. 8)

There are some decent ski and stay options in the Lincoln area for Cannon. Drive up Thursday night and ski Cannon for $73 dollars at Woodwards Motor Inn, or $59 dollars at Parker's Motel.

What's great about 93 is that if you're coming from a distance (Conn or NYC), you don't have to drive all the way to the ski resorts the night before. You can break up the drive, stay in Manchester or Concord, and finish the last hour in the morning. I know many people find that more appealing than packing it all in in one shot.

Growing up in NH, I've never done this, but I'd also imagine that the lodging options are much more plentiful then up north.

Chalets at Mittersill: are there any for sale? Imagine if you bought one way back after Mittersill went out of business and still owned it. That would be great to see the ski area reopen.

Driving: from Boston or anywhere south that is accessible to 93, Cannon is really easy to get to. You can't miss it.

I'd be interested to see if the manager's efforts to "Sunday River-ize" the place, i.e. blow more snow, groom more, and advertise more, have made a difference in terms of numbers.

I have a friend whose parents own one. They bought it way back in the day, have been complaining for years, and are finally happy with their purchase. Funny the way life works.

Or go over the top ie. 91 all the way to 93 south and in to the Whites. I've done this from NNJ many times. Have stayed in White River Jct to break up the drive, stayed at the Hampton Inn at Littleton last year, convienient to just about everything up there.

I've been in many of those chalets, and you cannot beat the location! A couple of years ago there was a waiting list to buy those units. Some are built great, some are built like crap. Do the homework before pursuing!

If I had the money I wouldn't mind owning one of the well built one's!
