Snowmaking recovery efforts at Mt. Ellen are starting now, and will be focused on Rim Run, Elbow, Midflats/Follies initially. I'll update more later.

If there is any advantage to being here in the banana belt (the Poconos) its a good arsenal of snowmaking and Camelback will be firing away when ever they can. Expect conditions to be ok by the weekend.

Any idea how Pat's Peak held up? Only reason I'm asking is that I'm going with a group on Saturday and this will be the first time out for someone in the group. Hoping he gets something slightly soft for his first time!

Anything ungroomed at Sunapee is rock solid. Bumps are unskiable.

Glades and other natural snow trails are closed. Just as well, you can't even get a ski edge to bite into anything that wasn't groomed last night. Terrain park was closed today for reshaping of features.

From their website "Wednesday through Friday nights we will be launching a snowmaking blizzard at Mount Sunapee." Don't know why they don't start tonight.

have a trip planned to smuggs this weekend. Looks like they have a small handful of beginner and a small smattering of intermediate trails open. Figures; the 1 long weekend trip I get to do all year  :puke:

Looks like they picked up some snow yesterday and have a chance for more the next few days so hopefully the skiing is good for you. Regardless it's going to be colder than a sober eskimo out there so bundle up!

Blue was much better then I expected yesterday. Some trails took more damage then others. Once the sun came out it got nice a soft. I enjoyed it so much, I skied 32 runs and stayed for over 5 hours.

Hunter skiing Jan 26
Hi All,
Yes, there is some snow left on the mtn. Yesterday there was officially 5.4" of rain recorded in Tannersville and temps at 52. The creeks rose higher and faster than in recent memory (see attached pics). There were about 25 fools who paid to ski yesterday on "B" lift only!! The localmotion race was of course cancelled. Water flooded the mtn's boiler room, High Peaks locker room lounge and rear locker rooms under Colonel's Hall.
Now for skiing today: Grooming early this am was extensive and successful considering the damage that was done to the slopes. The surface was chunky granular on top of a thin hard base. Lollypops were everywhere due to numerous bare spots, fissures and sink holes caused by the water running under the snow. Racer's took a very hard hit (ungroomed) with major bare spots but was open only for the crazy ones. The entire east side only opened around 11 am with bare spots and stones. The temp was 24 at the top and about 34 at the base and we had some very strong blinding snow squalls early, some sun mid morning and then more clouds and flurries making for flat light. The temp is dropping and the wind picking up so the surface started to firm up. It was very heavy crud as you may imagine after such a rain event. I did not go west but the only access was via Belt to Wayout and the wind out of the west was strong. The mtn was very empty.
Blowing will commence tonight as many guns / hoses were being hooked up during the day. We had the Jan thaw and now recovery will commence every night this week as needed. It will be very cold again by the end of the week.
The police are here Wed & Thursday this week for their annual races and the firemen (hosers) are here next week Tues - Thurs for their races.
The movie this weekend: Pirate Radio.
The quad will be shut down on either this Sun night or the following Sun night for two full days for repairs to the motor (being sent to Albany) after which the singles line will again be set up and all chairs can be fully loaded.
Ski ya,
Jon

Jay peak.....11" since yesterday
Stowe........6-8 inches since yesterday
It's almost a sure thing that storms as big as this one was will give us the old reach around where it counts....I told my BC crew we will be skiing pow again this w/e when they were over for my baby shower on sunday watching my patio table mushroom shrink.
"That's optimistic." they said dryly....
By Saturday in the Jay area there will be a foot plus of settled and supportive pow.....and we will ski, oh yes, we will.

+1. I'll be there. Gotta be a believer. Can't entirely believe the forecasters; it will be interesting what the FIS gang says - they only wakeup when something good is worth talking about.

Sorting through my options, may take a day at $teaux and a day at JP, last minute call. Heading up tomorrow.

Unless you're going to be exploring the side country, I would say Stowe will do a better job making this count for the groomers. Also, the side country at Stowe is more accessible w/o car drops....but if you were going to be hitting those areas down to 242 at J, these weather patterns make the trip a bit farther north worth it....As far as inbounds woods on Friday...it will depend on how the next batch of lake affect sets up. I imagine this snow dampened the harshness of the snow but did not cover it.....and every inch will count for what happens thursday. One thing is for sure, J is gonna be cold as a witches tit in a tin bra later in the week. Either way, I think conditions will be way better then you might have thought a day or two ago. Have fun!

Thanks. I'm not a fan of groomers, prefer the natural. But, I had resigned myself to all groomers until this morning. This much snow already is good news. I'm always up for some slack country, mid-angle glades. but wasn't expecting much. We'll see what the next 48 hours brings. Not setup for real BC, in mixed company, plus I can be a lazy old fart sometimes.

I understand the winds are whipping up there, up to 25 mph. I'll be interested in hearing how dry the snow was / did it blow into the woods / did it get packed down in time? Cold doesn't bother me. I was born with antifreeze in my veins :)
