Very nice. I try to spend time on epic, but it all seems too serious there all the time. I guess I haven't been looking hard enough.

Used to be a regular poster on the old EpicSki.

They have gone hopelessly commercial and are run by an "in crowd" clique like the cool kids lunch table 7th grade.

They should change the name to
GapicSnobs.

I find the group to be dominated by "industry insiders", such as ski patrol, ops folks, industry technical reps, retail and commercial ski business owners and participants. No doubt, the information is often accurate. That's OK for what it is, but I want a "consumer" forum, where people are free to discuss their on- and off-slope experiences. I really want to know how conditions are, rather than how a lift operates, binding release or liability clauses.
What I like here is that often two people can have very different opinions of the same resort; I like that diversity in opinion. As a reader you make up your own mind.

IMO, there is nothing "wrong" with Epic; there's a forum for everyone.

Pretty funny post.

I used to post there; too clique-ey. And if you're not doing things the "Epic Way" (which I beleive involves skiing out West or taking 6+ trips out there per year) you're just a "gaper".

I first checked out Epicski when I was looking to go solo out west. Turns out they were having a "Gathering" in Utah that year where people from all over come to one specific resort to meet up and ski. I was encouraged to come out even though I am not half the skier as most of them Pretty terrific group of people who made me feel comfortable going off piste for the first time and making sure I had a good time without getting into trouble. Always someone to help out with rides to the mountain and have a beer and dinner with afterward. Somebody I never met even gave me a free set of powder skis. Can't say enough about the good people there.

It's not the first time I've heard about the "clique" thing so it must be the perception. I think like all internet boards it takes a while before you build up a rep and there are always those that are favored because of their long time particiaption on the board. I'm a borderline gaper and I have a great time with them when I go west.

True, it is more western oriented just as this board is more eastern oriented. They are having the "Gathering" in Colorado this year in early April, so if anyoione is interested it's a chance to meet some of the people on the board.

Chaos reminds me of a poster named Chef that used to post on FC many years back. Same style- wonder if they are the same person.

That is pretty funny ...

Over the years many people have told me that I look like a god while I'm skiing. I always just sort of figured they were exaggerating, until last weekend. I was skiing a peak in the Himalayas when I came to a difficult spot. It was a crevasse, seemingly without bottom and about 200 ft wide. I spent about 10 minutes building a kicker on my side of the crevasse and prepared for the jump by finishing off the rest of my cognac and smoking a cigar. As I hurled the empty bottle into the crevasse I skied toward the kicker. I hit the jump a little slow and realized that I might come up about 30 feet short...so I started to flap my arms in order to gain that extra few feet. As I flapped away I looked into the crevasse and caught my reflection off the sheer ice walls. I truly did look like a god...a golden, phoenix-like god. Obviously I cleared the gap and continued on my way. But the point is...I look god-like when I ski.

No doubt some folks here lurk or post on Epicski. I'm a fan of one of the posters who calls himself Chaos. He hasn't posted often but his threads are wonderful. Here is a recent example: http://www.epicski.com/forum/thread/99437/god-like-appearance-while-skiing

Edd, I'm assuming that you are, in fact, Chaos himself. Cross-promotion is a brilliant tool. And though your Epicski posts contribute nothing to the world of skiing, they are pretty freak'n hilarious. The Jack Black avatar is a good fit. Rock ON!!!!!!
