As my kids get a bit older, and i'm skiing with them with some of THEIR friends around, I'm going to plan on having some gaper moments myself, ON PURPOSE :lol:

My kids insisted I get rid of my old Bell helmet. I must have been the only one wearing a bike helmet back in the ice age.

It was at Vail, I believe last winter (maybe the winter before) if I remember correctly. The guy was loading, there was some apparent issue, or atleast he thought there was with his kid getting on (the person actually sitting in the chair) and somehow the guy actually managed to get between the back of the seat bench and the vertical seat rest and his pants got caught up as he went through the back of the seat (I still don't completely grasp how that's possible even after thousands of chairlift rides over 30+ years of skiing). They stopped the lift, and untrapped him. And I bet that he quickly got his a$$ out of there and has since been the butt of many jokes (sorry about the bad puns, just too easy in this case :lol: )

In my humbling experience, you will not need to try to make the gaper moments happen. As a parent, they will happen naturally whether you want them to or not. What you may want to be ready for, however, is trying to make those unintentional gaper moments look like you did (or wore, or said) it on purpose.! :grin:

The lifties were actually at fault for that poor bastard as the bench part of the seat was flipped up and they never put it down for them to load on.

Guy literally got on and fell through while the kid caught himself.

I saw some knock herself out cold on the Bear Quad at Killington. I think it was a get on the lift slide off the chair hit your head on the seat as it leaves the station maneuver. She laid in the snow for a minute without moving. Her friends came over and eventually carried her off. The lifties just stood there for the most part. Ultimate gaper moment.

To be fair, I'm sure the lifties are told not to touch anyone who's injured. They probably were waiting for ski patrol to arrive.

The lifties did the right thing by not moving her at all. If she is lying there not moving it should be assumed thatshe has a head injury and if she has a head injury then it is assumed that she has a neck injury until proved otherwise. We taught our lifties not to move anyone until patrol arrived.
Fire the liftie. Tool.

Since lift mishaps seem to be in this gaper thread I'll tell a story. At Blue Mountain right past the loading area there is a large depression with a drain in the middle of it. One day a few seasons ago the drain was apparently clogged and it was full with probably 18" of water, I'm sure it was nice and cold. I was skiing alone but a group of 5 got on the chair next to me and this girl fell off the chair, just as it was pulling away, into the water. They fished her out and restarted the lift. I felt bad for her, I'm sure her day was over. A little while later they had a pump running to drain the water from the "pond".

She eventually got up with the help of her friends and they carried her out of the way towards the lodge. Ski patrol must have showed later because I never saw them. It wasn't funny, nobody laughed but was certainly a good indicator of what happens when you are getting on a lift you aren't ready to get on in terms of skill or attention. People in line were starting to shout "what's the hold up?" That was a little cold.
