Why do athletes do this?

Dumb question, I suppose. From me, it's expected.

Why do athletes, always seem to be sporting a two day old beard on game day?

What do they do, shave right after the game? It seems most prevalent in baseball and hockey. I'm sure there are others, I just don't notice. And then there is Bode....Granted, I don't know squat about sports.

If they are anything like me they hate shaving. I only do it every couple of days or if I have something I need to dress up for.

This.

It's not like they're making sales pitches to business execs who expect them to look professional. I'd do it if I could (probably every third day or so.)

Tends to be a tradition/superstition thing. When you're playing well, you don't want to change anything up. Don't shave, eat the same food every day, take the same route to the stadium everyday, etc.

Really prevalent in Hockey where the longstanding tradition is to not shave during your entire playoff run. Which is why you see the teams playing in the Stanley Cup finals looking more like Chewbacca than a human with their 2+ month playoff season.

I shave everyday for work, but not only every few days on weekends or vacations.

This. Hockey beards bring luck. Don't mess with a winning streak.

Only person I know who doesn't have to shave everyday, but does anyways is my retired father.

Outside some very brief instances I've had a beard since I was able to grow one. Can't stand shaving. Beard sees the trimmer every 3 weeks or so, neck every 3 days.

I used to stand up in front of clients weekly. Since I switched roles and never see clients anymore I only shave if I have special occasion. I have had a several instances where I will shave during lax season and some of my kids don't recognize me right away.

Most replies have addressed the general laziness factor. I don't shave unless I have to work. Period. But billski specifically was wondering about "perpetual two day old" stubble it seems. I would wonder if pro athletes have more stubble for away games than home games. ;) If they're anything like me, they get told that two days old is perfect but everything after that gets annoying. I'm up to five days since I'm on vacation... I'm lucky to get a peck on the forehead at this point. It is worth not shaving though. :D So that is my theory.

This is why me and my Gillette get some quality time essentially every day! The wife doesn't like the scruff, so therefore I don't let the scruff form! ;)

Plus, I will say that as someone who has to wear a surgical mask multiple days a week, back in the days when on a whim my wife asked me to grow a goatee and keep a few days worth of scruff in place, I tended to find myself picking pieces of the mask out of my scruff everytime I looked in the mirror and/or one of my assistants would tell me that I looked like I had chunks of toilet paper hanging from my face

I shave on weekdays, but tend not to on weekends.
Facial hair is sooooooo far out of dress code it's not even a question.
