Hello everyone-

My name is Brad and I am a student at Niskayuna High School. I am currently at the beginning of a year-long project for my senior Engineering Design and Development class. At this stage in the process, I have chosen what I believe to be a problem, and have created a very brief survey which I need to distribute to my target market (Alpine skiers-specifically ski patrols) to verify that this is indeed a problem. If you could please just take about 90 seconds of your time to fill out this survey, it would be much appreciated. Thank you so much!

Please follow this link to take the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/YNYWHGR

I can't decide of this is seroius or not. The high school is real, it is in NY, the IP address is from NY. These kids must just be from the same class?

I'm guessing the teacher gave them a template statement to use when pitching for results.

That is the worst survey I have ever seen. I have been patrolling for 15 years. You name it I have seen it in ALL ages from 3 year olds to 70 year olds. As to how many times a specific age group has done this or done that, I have no idea. I have not recorded any such data. As for my memory. Lets just say my memory is not as good as it use to be.

Sorry I could not complete the survey.

You guys act like you're in High School. If you really want to help why not offer better questions?

I must admit - out of complete curiosity - I took the survey although I'm not a patroller. However, these weren't the type of questions only a ski patroller could answer. I did instruct for a few years back in my youth and have skied for over 40 years so I think I recognize an out of control skier when I see one.

The one telling question (one I should have answered differently) had to do with a solution other than instruction or training for the out of control skier. Other than physically assisting a distressed skier (I've never known a patroller or instructor to not offer assistance) would be to have better signage for terrain that beginners just do not belong on. Will this stop beginners from skiing where they ought not? No. You will always have skiers testing their limits or just plain lost.

 A better solution might be to survey skiers when they purchase their lift pass. Beginner skiers would be made to wear bright hunter orange wind breakers to alert gate keepers at the tops of all expert trails to stop those beginners from entering. - Don't like that idea? Then get used to out of control skiers.

Black Phantom, stop being a fat troll and stfu.

For everyone else thanks for the help, although your critiques (especially catskills and abubob) are really not relevant.

Abubob-I'm trying to come up with a ski brake solution, not trying to warn people of out of control skiers, so I have know idea where you're going with your idea.

Catskills-it's not a bad survey just because you can't remember anything. I've talked face-to-face with ski patrols who have identified 15-45 as a reasonable age group. I'd appreciate if you'd say something scholarly next time rather than bashing my survey because of your personal problems.

I'm not talking about warning people ABOUT out of control skiers. I'm talking about keeping beginners and novices off expert terrain. You wanna slow skiers down? Keep them off the steeps.

Good thought Abub. I'll add to that the notion of bailouts. There should be one bailout after the first couple hundred yards, for those who got their butts kicked and really need to get out. Of course, that assumes they can steer their sliding backside over to the bailout. Or how about a rope tow that runs in reverse (down)?

Keep at it bj. You've got thick ski and keep cool. Don't let the arrows, two tips and broken poles slow you down. I still think you won't find many patrol here. Go to Epicski and tell them I sent you. You're sure to get thrown out that way!

Once you get past the troll, hoodlums and thugs in this group, you will be respected. Well maybe not. I never was
