Id be afraid to take a core shot to rental skis and end up having to pay for them at a value much more than they are worth. I guess you could say I don't always think about my equipment first when going down a run, especially in lean snow years.

Damage insurance is cheap money and worth every penny if you're an off piste skier.

The trick is to call it "demo-ing" instead of "renting" then you sound super cool instead of super stupid. It costs the same and you usually get the same crappy bindings, but you can tell all your friends how you demo'd some high-end gear.

Good to know, didn't know it was offered. Figured normal wear and tear would be covered by not any major base damage.

I wouldn't worry about. Just go on the offensive: "scratched your skis?!?! I almost killed myself on the terrible thin cover have. You want to talk liability....!!!" They'd rather send you on your way than have to hear it. I had some rentals (excuse me DEMOS) stolen at Smuggs. They sent me a bill, I said "F-off I wouldn't have been renting if MY skis hadn't also been stolen there."

Translation- When I first went to SLC they took off all the ski and snowboarding equipment because of weight ( no problem with that) but they didn't tell us. Go to get suitcase that comes, go to separate ski section nothing for our plane comes so then go to find out that they put everyone stuff on later plane, but I was planning on going to Park City and skiing for free with airline ticket, that is why I booked 6 am flight. If they told us I could have made arrangements for rentals, so I never got my free day at park City. And they got my stuff to my hotel by 4 am so airline didn't have to pay for rentals, I never fly that airline if I do not have to again.

This goes to what I was saying. I think of "rentals" as entry level equipment that is lower end and not great. That said, most places usually offer at least two or three tiers of rental equipment and I usually reach for the middle or top of the line demo gear. The middle is usually one season old and may not be the hottest thing out there but is better than entry level.

So yeah it may be a play on words, but there is a distinction.

I always demo when I have to fly to ski. shlepping skis on the plane is a pia, not to mention the cost and risk of loss. plus its a good opportunity to try different boards that are appropriate for the conditions.

Renting from a shop is a good idea if you are planning on buying skis at the end of your trip. The shop I used let me demo a different ski everyday (even let me swap it out at lunch once) and then offered to sell me a new pair of skis of my choice minus whatever my rental fees were for the week. I am not sure that all shops do this but I know of plenty that do

I took a core shot on my rentals when I skied Delirium Dive at Sunshine Village and they just charged me $40 and were cool with it. Although, it is Sunshine Village so I am sure they were used to people coming in with that problem.

Good choice on Park City, it's like skiing out east only you can look over the ridgeline at the Rockies.

For your information I only was skiing their for the free day the rest of my several trips to Utah have all been Snowbasin, Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton. I sure I try Park City when I moved there, but I rather go were it snowy.:)

You see, there's this airline called Southwest, where "one bag" counts as "One ski bag, and one boot bag". Oh yah, and that bag fly's free! There you go.

Oh, probably should have clarified that I was speaking from experience renting from shops that weren't located at the base of the resort. Standing in a resort rental line watching the first chair leave without me would not be worth it.

I would rent, skis or board, from a shop but get high performance stuff, more of a demo. Out West I would without a doubt rent to make sure I have the propper tool for the conditions.

I went a year a while back getting nice rentals form a shop near Waterville, Great American Ski Co. I think it was called. Not your typical rentals where they line you up and hand you a yellow or green gripped pole based on your height and then set you up with some skis 3 sizes to small. Skis were always tuned and I tried out a bunch of stuff, eventually bought a pair off of then at the end of the season for next to nothing.

I would not rent boots, east or west.

This! I went helicopter skiing in British Columbia with Canadian mountain holidays in 2002 and everyone pretty much took the provided powder skis...

geez i should have done a search....look like this has been discussed before. my bad i've been out of the forums for a while. sounds like the consensus is people try not to "rent" or "demo" unless its warranted by a trip out west.

tele gear is harder to find, but out west AT gear is relatively ubiquitous, skins included, beacon not.
