I think the nail has been hit on the head - it's not powder the masses don't like, it's the chopped up / bumped up that follows. I was with someone today at SR that said "I don't like when there's so much snow".

So the untracked usually lasts until about 9:30, 8:30 on a weekend (that's probably being generous).

On the other hand I've grown to love the chop and bumps myself. Grooming some stuff around midday isn't a bad idea to keep people happy but probably a logistical nightmare.
The weekend is an impossibility with the nyc metro/tristate crowds heading up. East coast skiing is ridiculously crowded. We need more hills. All those lost ski area's :(

I'm talking weekday/call in sick to work stuff. Also, one of the reasons the untracked isn't lasting as long is because of how small percentage of the mountain is left ungroomed. If you leave 80 trails ungroomed(especially wide ones)....freshies will be had for longer. Honestly, as long as it stays epic for an hour I'm happy. An hour of good powder skiing is heaven and better than no powder skiing at all obviously.

Agreed. It's a pain for resorts, but very doable to close a trail one at a time and just put a groomer on it. Just have ski patrol rope it off with nets. A place that has multiple groomers can get that done quick especially since it's much easier than trying to move mounds of fake stuff. It's easy to groom chopped up real snow.

Ok, an hour on a weekday is feasible. Good call.

Doesn't sound like anything Joe Average is going to spring for!
LOL
If you put your average skier on a 90-100mm width ski with rocker, they should not have major problems in the powder. They should not have to lean back or worried about sinking tips like with old school ski's. The performance difference for both newbies and experts is remarkable. I was joking about hellbents of course. Hellbent are totally unnecessary unless you're stomping switch landing in bottomless pow off cliffs. Get a rossi soul 7/atomic access or something similiar and your'e good to go

Okemo left a bunch un-groomed yesterday. Half of Chief, all of Lift-line, Defiance, Stumpjumper. I didn't make it over to Jackson Gore but I assume Big Bang and a few others.

Those trails got tracked out fast but man where they fun, especially Upper Liftline.

They opened up Double Diamond Glades as well , too early in my opinion (not enough cover) and it was a $h!& Show in there with way to many people that shouldn't have been in there.

I overheard that some folks have expressed that they don't want 100% groomers. Sounds like MT Ops may be listening.

I have had 2 POW days at Okemo this year and they gave been great.

The timing of the storm probably had something to do with it. In MWV, the snow was over by midnight, but after the groomers had done their magic. I suspect most areas probably don't have enough gear to groom their entire complement of trails.

I don't really care about super steep stuff and I like wide trails, but the whole grooming thing sounds ridiculous for a mountain that size in vt. Do they really groom everything flat after an overnight dump? I get grooming a beginner green trail, but the whole friggin mountain? They have like 120 trails. Do they leave at least half ungroomed or is it like jiminy and groom everything flat even when it's blower powder? It's amazing their consumer base puts up with that crap. There'd be a riot if they tried that at any resort in utah. lol And it's not like okemo doesn't get a lot of snow either. It's right on the spine of the greens and gets regular dumps.

Out of 120, about 20 don't have snowmaking and are normally ungroomed, off the top of my head, including glades, obviously. Then about five bump runs which are usually seeded at some point. And there's about 45 different runs you can take on the mountain, so let's say about 2/3 are groomed?

I have noticed some different choices this season, as they do have a new director of mountain operations. Trails opened in a different order, different trails left ungroomed for longer after the first big snowstorm, etc.

I don't do glade skiing. I don't wear a helmet and a helmet don't do anything anyway if you run into a tree anyway. I mean I can go through the tree's at like 5 mph in a cross country ski enjoy nature type deal, but that's all I feel comfortable with. So there's like 5 trails probably that are ungroomed that aren't glades out of about 120. Yeah. I'll never be going to that mountain. Where do people like that guy on fb come from? He's afraid of snow? Don't go on a powder day then douche. What a complete poser.

Well, up to 15 ungroomed on normal days, if you include mogul runs which are seeded occasionally.

Another problem with Okemo on a true powder day would be lack of pitch. A good % of those groomed trails are too flat for anything but straight down if they were powder.

A minute from the Alta exit off the I-15!
Okemo has great unmarked trees in between the Glades and South chairs. Because of the people on this forum who think Okemo is a groomed pancake I get more fresh tracks. Your guys' loss...

However, I will admit the other 90% of the mountain is pretty boring.
