Here is the deal. One weather report said it was going to rain a little Saturday morning at Belleayre. If it rains for an hour Saturday morning at Belleayre you could "may" get a free lift ticket. :flag: Hey you never know. It could happen.

RAIN CHECKS - Don't let the whims of Mother Nature's discourage you from coming to Belleayre. Not only is rain in the city usually snow on our mountain, but we guarantee you will get a good day of skiing, because if the day is declared a rain day after you have purchased your ticket , we invite you to come back and ski Belleayre for free anytime!* No one else guarantees the weather! Just bring back your rain date lift pass to Guest Services the next time you visit and we'll exchange it with a sunny smile. (Call to confirm rain dates at 845-254-5600, ext. 314) * Restrictions are as follows - The Rain Check Promotion applies to full day tickets sold between the hours of 8am and 12pm (noon). Rain must occur for one continuous hour between the hours 8am to 12pm as determined by Belleayre Ski Patrol.

Both Saturday and Sunday turned out to be rain-check days (unfortunately)...

Saturday was definitely a rain day, they were announcing it all day.

I wonder if I can bring my season pass back next year and get a new one? :)

The snow conditions at Belleayre were great this weekend if you did not mind the occasional rain drops. Skiing in light rain with fog are usually great days on the snow. The chairs on the lifts were not 100 percent full which meant the trails were not that crowded even with limited number of trails opened. Yes you had to ski/ride the few trails that were opened over and over. Hey it could be worse. We could have been home watching foooootball. :smash:

The 2 for 1 rain check is a great deal to boot.

Two weeks ago on a Friday night before everything left melted, Crotched wa slike that. Was insane to be on top of the mountain with 15 foot visibility, fog that felt like a cold sauna, and a T-Shirt on at 3am.

Missed the snow, but damned it was cool.

I couldn't believe it when I heard the rain check announcement on Sunday. The snow was great and most of the day was just drizzle until around 2:00. I bought the pass in the morning knowing full well what I was in for and was very happy with the conditions. Don't these guys need to make money????

BTW, I like the new HSQ but that one trail leading down to it is going to be a disaster on crowded days or during most of the NE "hardpack" days.

I read your blog about Sunday 1/14 and couldn't disagree more about the conditions. I thought they were great if you could ignore a little rain. Your "heavy and slushy" was railable carves and great bumps to me. Guess it shows how much opinions can vary.

goldsbar your correct but every ski area in the Northeast has trails like this. This is why if your smart you will ski medium to small size ski areas that only have a few main trails open like Belleayre rather than large resorts that have more trails opened with 10 times more people. Glad you enjoy skiing this weekend at medium to small size mountain.

Thanks for reading - please feel free to leave comments at the blog. Opinions can vary greatly, no doubt, and I can really relate to anyone who had a great day yesterday. I wish I was skiing with a positive person like you instead of my son, who kept saying, "Dad, you said it was going to snow yesterday, too." A day skiing anything is always better than a day at work, so I wasn't exactly disappointed. The reliability of the carves and the forgiveness of the bumps does add a fun factor, except for people who are not fans of homogenization. My Metrons and slolom race skis are great at Belleayre right now, but put on an AME or GS ski and the fun factor plummets. There isn't enough variety for the AME's, and not enough space to pull big blazing GS arcs (I miss you, Dot Nebel). The skiing was fun in a couple of spots - the top of Winnisook and the edges of Onteora and Wanatuska, as I noted in my blog - but if you consider the conditions "great" on Sunday, you must be either forgetting how good it was last year on this weekend, or are in serious need for a trip to someplace like Vail or Park City :snow:

Hah - yes, that's true. Conditions are all relative to expectations.

PS - I like your quiver. I go with metrons (M11) and a slalom ski (Fischer WC SC). Maybe I'll pick up a pair of GS skis or nice wide powder skis at the end of the year.

Increaseing the quiver cheap: eBay rules - if you don't mind skiing used or demos, are patient with your watchlist, quick with last-minute bids, handy with bindings, bases and edges....
