backcountry skiing

i'm going to start backcountry skiing this year and had a couple of questions. I just put dukes on my 08 gotama's and need to get skins, was looking on a site called directskins.com, there pretty reasonable price wise. Have you ever heard of them? Should i get synthetic or mohair? and finally do you know of any good beginner bc routes?

Get the nylon. And get Goodman's Backcountry Skiing book for suggested first BC routes. climbingskinsdirect.com is definitely cheaper than BD and G3 (though you can get good end of season deals on BD and G3). I've seen reports conclude that they are good skins. I haven't seen anyone raving about them, though. Probably a good option if you need to buy now because BD and G3 skins are going to be full price which will be substantially more. I have no idea about long term durability of climbingskinsdirect.com.

The Goodman book is a great start. One nice thing about backcountry skiing is that you can take "established routes" or simply make your own.

A great place to go this weekend might be Greylock. There will be plenty of folks around while you test your equipment, and there's a nice warming hut at the top. It might almost be worth it to pay the premium for store bought skins so you could get out tomorrow.

Thanks, I'll checkout some BD and G3 skins this week. I also got the book best BC skiing in the northeast, it has a ton of tours. I can't wait to try out my equipment.
