Now that all the “speculation” had pretty much turned into certainty (lousy condition all around). I need some advice.

I’ve just gotten new boots and I need to break them in. (also work out what else need to be fine tuned). I don’t feel like driving a long way or paying a fortune for lift ticket just to ski refrozen mud for a couple hours.

If it’s between ice and slush, I personally always prefer slush. But I fear this weekend slush isn’t even an option? The rain probably washed all the snow away in Berkshire and Cats. Whatever’s left are further north, which will be refrozen slush, aka ice lumps?

The best course of action is of course stay home and finish some chores. But if I were to drive a couple hours (Cats/S Vt max), where would your guess be that have the “least unpleasant” condition?

Keep an eye on what Stratton and Mount Snow do the next couple of days. They've got the snowmaking firepower to do a lot of resurfacing if they want to spend the $. Either of the two could have decent conditions on snowmaking trails by the weekend if they turn the guns on

Mount Snow recovery efforts post freeze up in a 24hr timeframe on multiple occasions in January have been IMPRESSIVE! Basically 200 acres of fresh, soft machine made snow, and in the case of today's weather event, 36 or so hours from freeze up tonight to first chair on Saturday for the trails that don't get snowmaking to drain and dry and get a few passes from the groomers

And they've already announced on their snow report and social media feeds that the guns will be turned on overnight on over a dozen trails

not gonna be enough. i'm fully committed to a sugarbush weekend. airbnb with another couple. will ski groomers and give my girlfriend some lessons.

I'm fully expecting a "stick to the groomers" weekend at SB, but I'm hoping maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised somehow. Looks like maybe approaching a fresh 3" at the summit already...but only a fraction of that by the time you get down to mid mountain.

Hi guys ...

Planned a trip in Oct with my son, coming from Philadelphia. We are skiing Killington Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

What should I expect their recovery to be considering the rain they got today? Will I be impressed or disappointed?

Thanks

ok, between those 2, Stratton will be a lot easier on my bank account. (Ikon pass)

I was really wishing the cats can come out ok though. It’s a shorter drive. And Sunday is a flex day (<$50)

Assuming you normally ski other places in PA... Killington will probably kick ass!!!

Seriously though, an inch or so tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday will get the groomers in good shape by Sunday. Tuesday maybe we pick up 3-6" so you will probably have a good trip! Treeshots and cliff jumps no, but groomers and maybe some of the ungroomed/naturals will come back Tuesday in OK shape with 6" of snow on top of ice.

Haha and thanks .. the Poconos are not joke lol but that was I was thinking. Haven't been to Vt in many years and it's my son's 1st time.

I'm assuming Killington recovers well or should I hit Mt Snow or Stratton on Sunday which some have mentioned in this thread?

Thanks in advance.

"Snow Reporter's Update
January 24 2019 - 05:06 pm After a day of warm, wet weather, the temperatures are finally starting to fall here in Killington. Effective snowmaking temperatures will arrive sometime this evening, putting the snowmakers back to work on resurfacing projects across the resort. Thanks to the best snowmaking and grooming teams in the business, The Beast bounces back fast. If you’re planning to ski or ride Killington tomorrow, please be sure to check back for morning updates. With today’s substantial rainfall, followed by rapidly dropping temperatures tonight, we could see some lift and grooming delays in the morning.
Killington groomers will sit out the first shift tonight, waiting for temperatures to drop after midnight before heading out to smooth and soften about 70 trails.
Following today’s challenging thaw/freeze cycle, the Killington Parks crew will scale back for Friday, concentrating on the Ramshead parks to ensure the best grooming possible. Look for Timberline, Astroland, Easy Street and Lil’ Stash to be open with about 60 features. Dream Maker and The Stash should be back up and running for the weekend though, and that will bring the full count back to 100 plus features.
Remember that your Killington ticket or pass is also valid at Pico Mountain, located just a short drive to our west on Route 4. With two resorts for one price, a Killington Lift Ticket offers by far the most open terrain in Eastern North America. Pico is open Thursday through Monday and peak days."

well, if you are just going to break in some boots, Belleayre will probably have fresh snow blown on a trail or two.

But yeah, Snow or Stratton will have the best reconditioned trails....just a question of how far ou want to drive I suppose.

What about Hunter? They know how to make snow....

I would say Killington has the best chance of recovery from this past system, a little fresh plus what they do better than anyone !

They can make snow and groom better than anyone in my opinion !

Mount Snow's fan gun collection, in my opinion, recovers the numerous light blue terrain faster. Killington has more darker blue and black terrain that will ski decent in the morning and get skied off. At Killington, follow the ski report and keep track of what trails get snowmaking. Right now for instance it is "resurfacing targets like Lower Skyeburst, Bittersweet, Great Eastern and Great Northern." So Bittersweet will be one of the places to be tomorrow.

Temps on Monday are going to be in the low teens, so snowmaking will be putting out some superb man made skiing. Mount Snow puts out a thinner layer of pool felt on more trails at once, Killington puts out a deep layer of talc on fewer trails at once.

Whichever you choose, skiing under the guns is almost always the place to be after a wet freeze. Bring bullet proof goggles and warm clothing under a water resistant layer. Monday is sunny and a high of 12 degrees, ideal snowmaking weather. At those temperatures Killington's horsepower puts out a deep talc powder day. You can play with the distance from the guns to find the ideal snow for you in depth, moisture content, and visibility. Bumps will form if the trail gets popular.

Unfortunately you are skiing a few days after a freeze, which is less than ideal at any area. Get out early. Watch the forecast. Consider dumping Sunday and adding Wednesday!

How is Okemo's recovery work? I have the epic pass and am hoping to ski next weekend. If I'm going to be stuck on resurfaced groomers, might as well go somewhere free....
