With Spring and Summer approaching, I was wondering if there were any Kayakers out there with some good NE location suggestions? Located close to Killington, VT, my husband and I are interested in nature, wildlife and calm water kayaking. Day trips preferred but open for all suggestions!

My sister lives up at Lake Bomoseen (sp?) not too far from Killington, I'm pretty sure they go boating there. Not sure about kayaking or what kind of other marine craft are on that forum.

Lisa, I'm also moving this thread to Misc. Discussion, so you can find it there!

trailboss is a flatwater guy.
www.npmb.com/ is more whitewater focused, but friendly folks and would likely be a good resource.

I want to try kayaking. It was on my hit list last summer and I didn't get around to it.

I'd like to try freshwater 1st just to get the feel for it, but then move on to rivers.

Great idea Root - i got into it for the first time last year and luved it . I rented gear till i knew whether i'd like it.- Great upper body workout

Now looking to get my own . I started at Mirror Lake and Lake Placid then in Sept we are at Bolton Landing for several weeks on Lake George -- both were nice kayaking . LG has lots of Islands and after Labor Day is quiet as far as boat traffic is concerned and there are several other lakes around the area within an hr including several rivers

Lots of options. Heck, let's start a kayaking thread....

For Killington, you can't beat Chittenden Reservoir. Close by, easy to get to, secluded, large, and amazing views.

I've done some lakes/ponds off of Route 100 (Woodward Reservoir, etc) but with the traffic on Route 100 it is noisy.

Lake Champlain: some nice bays and what not, but not really close.

And Bomoseen and Dunmore are options. I live on the latter. Both are INSANE on weekends though. They make nice evening paddles. Fern Lake is my favorite since it is close to me and quiet.

That's the way to go Root, take a few classes with the rentals. That way...just as in skis/boots...with increased knowledge/skillset you'll begin to want more performance and fit in a boat than when you just started out...
Once an off/on yakker...after canoeing for ~20yrs+. Now back to the canoe..with some of the newer boats.

Water...Snow = same stuff....just in another form.

I went for the first time last year with a friend of mine who has two Kayaks, so I borrowed one of his.

I'm not going to lie, i was COMPLETELY wiped out by the end of it, I could barely paddle anymore. We went for close to 4 hours, and we started downstream so I had to upstream the whole way back.

We started in Cumberland, RI, I think it's the Blackstone River.

An hour or so south of Killington is Grout Pond, a gem of a place to paddle and camp in the Green Mt. Natl Forest. A moderate portage from grout pond will get you into Sommerset Reservoir which is just about the closest thing to a wilderness experience you can get without really going to a wilderness area.

Yeah, the Chittenden Reservoir is great. We love it there! We may check out Lake Champlain as I have a lot of relatives there. My Aunt lives right on the lake and is always asking us to come up. Great post, thanks so much!

Four hours using the lowerarm muscles alone...can be brutal. Key is learning to seperate one's lowerbody's tasks from one's upperbody...letting hips become a part of the hull = do whatever the water wants...and developing a relaxed but strong shoulder-to-shoulder-to-arms upperbody...and to use an upperbody twisting motion, starting with torso/back/chest muscles and ending with a somwehat straightline pull with arms.. Try to think of planting the blade in molasses and rather than pulling the blade back....use your torso/back's power to pull your hips up to the spot where you planted the blade. The less splashing and heavier feel of the dense water = the more efficient you'll feel the hull pick up speed...

Beginning to ramble again, picking up a canoe in 2 weeks = very amped.
A very confusing time of year while trying to hold onto skiing with early season paddling.....
