No life jacket or helmet?

We did have jackets in the raft, but just FYI that is a very smooth river, at least the parts we were on. I know further north in Cumberland there are some rapids but we weren't even close to that... , I don't even know what the classes represent but basically it might as well have been flatwater or pond kayaking.

Probably not a great excuse for the lack of actually wearing the life jacket but having been on a swim team and avid swimmer for years I feel very comfortable in the water, the 10' to shore in the event of a capsize didn't but me that much :p

+1. I still swim 3-5 miles a week.

Based on the water in the pic that you posted, I wouldn't wear a life vest either.

Lisa - where on Champlain is the camp? If its up near Shelburne, a paddle up the LaPlatte River is fantastic. Put in on Bay Road in Shelburne.

I used to be an adventure guide out in colorado and took people on guided kayak tours. Glen lake is right behind lake bomoseen with not as many boaters as bomoseen which keeps the waters calm. I also know a small lake in fair haven which is a beautiful spot and doesn't allow anything motorized and there is a really nice walking trail. Easy day trips from rutland! Don't forget your fishing pole! :)

Nelsapbm, I'll keep that one in mind...that's much closer to where we live (Proctor). They live way up in Swanton which is about 2.5 hours from us. Shelburne is only about 1 hour

Stef, great info! I've heard of Glen Lake and heard it's beautiful so I'll keep that one in mind also. I don't think I'd even kayak at Bomo, too many boats (some crazier than others!!) lol. What lake are you referring to in Fair Haven? No fishing pole in the kayak...that'd be way too much for me to handle. It's bad enough when I have my cell phone, camera and binoc's! HAHA!
