SAM Magazine—Aspen, Colo., August 8, 2007—The industry took a step closer to the $100 adult day ticke last week when Aspen raised the price for a single day on the slopes during that resort’s 2007-2008 season to $87, a $5 increase from last season. While $82 itself seems steep for a day of skiing, Aspen didn’t have the most expensive ticket in the nation—or the state—last winter. That honor went to Vail, which charged $85 for an adult full day ticket. While Vail hasn’t released single-day prices for the upcoming year, it’s expected that it will also increase prices, making a day at nearby Ski Cooper seem like a great deal at just $39.

How much is Stratton or Okemo? A couple of years ago, Gapersville (err, Stratton) was within $2 of Vail. Stratton likes to jack up the price so that the great unwashed don't go their, and they can cater to their "upscale" (read: poser) clientle.

Yes, they've been successul with this approach. Bose has been successful selling speakers to people who apparently can't hear. Go figure.

So, I could gladly spend $87 at Aspen, or probably $80-85 at Gapersville. OK, is there a question here? Value. What a concept.

I love Aspen - you been there? Bell, Ruthies, Glades. $87. OK.

You get a decent discount with a Hunter season pass according to the email I just got...something like 20% off lodging during the peak season, and more early/late, and $73 tickets instead of $87.

it is still cheaper than a round of golf around here, and you get 4 mountains to choose from, and oh yeah, no lift lines!

my pass costs 1249.00 which if I hit my average is 17.84 bucks a day!

Haven't figured out everyone's humor level over here yet, but Whiteface has never been close to Vail, ever, lift ticket price wise. You listed Whiteface's holiday lift ticket rate from last season in your post, and I have no idea when Vail was last charging $72, but it sure wasn't last season, and probably not in the last five seasons either.

Yeah - no joke. Vail was $85 last season. $72 at Vail? Not in this century.

you can hike up the backside all day. You can even ride up your snowmobile. then just ride the upper lifts, they don't check for tickets at the 4 upper lifts.

If you want to hike the frontside (the side witht the cut trails) you have to be above the bottom of lift 3 by 8am.

But in order to ski the mountain properly you must have use of the Gondola and they check tickets there. In fact the lift ops get a 500 bonus if they catch a poacher.

good luck. Oh, one more thing. The hike is not easy, do you think you could make it and then ski all day?

I don't think that's too crazy..think of all the golf courses that charge over 100 bucks..plus most Aspen skiers get lower priced tickets through their hotel packages. Aspen is a posh place to ski..there are plenty of more sparten ski areas that still charge under $50 per day. Bridger Bowl MT and Magic Mountain VT come to mind. I'll happily pay $70+ per day to ski my favorite ski resort...Jackson Hole..I'd pay $150 a day to ski there if that's what they charged..it would still be worth it to me..

Good point. I enjoy playing golf, but it holds no comparison to skiing for me. But unless it's on an expense account (mine or someone else's) I'm not playing a course that charges $100 for a round. And as has been stated in other threads, there are lots of ways to get discount ski tickets. That's generally not the case for a round of golf.
