Ski Area:Attitash and Bear Peak
Conditions: Packed Powder, Artificial Powder, blowing snow, and damn cold
Trip Report: Took off Founders day back in December, so the trip was planned well before the cold was predicted. Overall I was really impressed with Attitash, it was brutally cold that day -4 at the base about -9 at the peaks with wind chill factors hovering between 20 and 40 below.
Went with a friend from work and we were both amazed at the total lack of people. There was a race going on all day and that blocked out Illusion, but the rest of the place was ours.
We parked at Bear Peak, got our lift tickets at 8:30, a whopping $7.50, and proceeded to head to down Wanderer and got in some ungroomed goodness for a bit on Snow Dancer. The snow was in really good shape considering the temps and the winds, and it was nice to see natural snow in the woods! Cut down Pinball alley and then down to the base again. It was cold, it was damn cold, we saw a racer come in with PURE WHITE cheeks and nose, it wasn't the snow, and it wasn't makeup, it was frostbite.
We went up the chair again and decided to see how the Attitash side was, getting from one peak to the other was alot of pushing over flatland, but not too horrible.
We headed up to the peak and found a nice little Ski Patrol warming house, the Guests Welcome sign was really nice to see, went in, warmed up, talked with the patrol for a bit, played with their black lab mix (hi Zoe
) for a while and then decided to take a few runs. We went down Saco to Chicken to Ammonoosuc to Lower Cathedral, it was a great long run but the Attitash side seemed to be alot colder for some reason, so we took another run (and another break at the peak) and headed over to Bear Peak, the ungroomed area of Snowdancer was a really nice treat, with the wind and the lack of skiers, it was like skiing on fresh ungroomed every run, by the time we went down, got back up and headed over, the wind cleared our trails and pushed fresh snow over the whales and onto our path.
Overall, the staff was friendly, and other than the racers, I doubt if there were more than 500 people there, I can't really judge crowds, it's either empty, good crowd or packed in to me. This place was definitely empty, Never waited for a chair, there were several open chairs between us and the next group if we could see them at all, and the snow was in really good shape.
The only icy areas were the places where it was 100% shade all of the time.
There are some pics (yea my camera froze up again, but I got more this time) in my gallery and I'll throw a couple here too.
This was the best 7.50 I've spent in a long time. Would like to try it again when they have more open.
