January 22, 2006

Weather: 30° & Sunny

Conditions: Snowmaking in progress on select trails. Trails were primarily "Frozen Snow" seemingly like ice except for trails with snowmaking

The weather was colder feeling than it seemed. The trail snow were frozen conditions from the warm & soft Saturday conditions.

Most of the advanced natural snow trails were frozen barren earth with it looking more like early November rather than mid-January.

We started over at Bear Peak and skied the quad-chairs trails and found them frozen and no fun, except for Snow Dancer where it was setup with snow guns.

Late morning we traversed over to Attitash Base and skied Tightrope & Upper Ptarmigan which was more of the same… we did enjoy the pitches of those trails. After an early lunch we basically skied the remainder of the day on Snow Dancer under the snow guns…

It appears for the mountain to fully open including glades and advance natural snow trails, this place needs a whole lot of natural snow. I hope they get it, I want to go back in late February…

The one time I skiied Attitash, I really dug tightrope. It got skiied off real quick though as much of the mountain wasn't open yet. I'm sure the weather will pick up soon and you'll see some good dumps by your February trip. Thanks for the report.

I was there also yesterday. It was definately icy. I started out on the Attitash side and the first couple of runs weren't bad, but got scraped down quickly. Went over to Bear peak and found lots of icy conditions other than under the guns. Got stranded on the high speed quad for about 15 minutes. Don't know what happened. On my last run on that side I saw a boy go bouncing down over the rocks under the quad. Hope he is ok, but it didn't look good from the lift. After that I decided it was time to leave while I was still whole! At least the views were good!

I skied Attitash on Saturday 1/21 and it felt like mid-April. Started off cloudy, really looking like rain, but it broke around 10:00 and it was great spring conditions until I left around 12:30. It was firm in spots but softened up very nicely. Even the spots that are normally bullet-proof were edgeable, almost slushy. Run of the day was Kachina. Got just enough sun in the morning to soften it up. Skier traffic made it bump up more and more every time I went down.

same with Saturday. I was skiing solo, so it was easier for me, but the lines were minimal. Even then, there were none at all before 10:30.

Mount Washington was M A J E S T I C with that blue sky background...I found myself mesmerized gazing at it...

Let's see if I can do this right, here was a view from Bretton Woods yesterday...
