Hello fellow shredders,

I am a Mountain Rec Student up in Northern VT and I am a NH local. I have done a lot of small backcountry tours into the foothills of the Lakes Region, and i have skied up in the Tucks and Gulf of slides areas.
I am very curious with getting out and skiing some more nontraditional ski routes this year, and during nontraditional times. I am knowledgeable with basic avalanche science, and i have made sure to look at proper avalanche forecasts when i go up into the Presi Range to ski.
My big question is do people ski the snowfields of Cardigan, Mowglis,South Baldface, the Percy Peaks, ect, in the middle of winter when the snow pack is so large and unstable. They dont seem like mountains that have evidence of avalanche slides, but i never see reports of people ripping deep pow in the middle of the winter up in these areas?
Looking at pictures like this (possible Skiable lines in red?)-----> I think of that being amazing skiing in some waist deep pow?

Is there any Real avi danger in these type of areas during mid winter?

Hope to hear some interesting responses or stories :)

Yes people ski Cardigan. There is a ski/hiking trail from the Cardigan Lodge in Alexandria I believe. While there is above treeline on Cardigan, not sure how often it is skiable. The top is very rocky that snow has trouble holding with the wind and all.

On the day I took that top picture of South Baldface my buddy and I were skinning the ledges above the shelter when the entire section between our switchbacks slid down to the next switchback. It was near the bottom of the hill where the slope was less pronounced... If we had been higher up the slide probably would have traveled further. So yes, I'd say there is an avy danger up there. We were there in the worst possible conditions for an avalanche (glossy layer covered by about a foot of new snow with additional wind loading overnight and a warmup the next day on a northeast facing slope). I believe the danger isn't so out of control that it is unskiable, but I wouldn't go up there alone or without the proper equipment.

My theory is that nobody talks about South Baldface because it is like Fightclub.

Thanks for reading the blog!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

And thanks for the info Noreaster... I am very curious to get up and dig some pits in the cardigan and south bald areas and get to know it a little better. I know that the north easternly side of both mountains hold pretty good snow on the slabs. I just keep seeing posts of people skiing it in late march but i have yet to see someone ski it in full blow powder conditions. I know that with an exposed area wind will quickly get rid of snow at the top and expose rock... but there is plenty of terrain up there that will hold some deep fresh snow. And i understand when you say it is like a "fight club" i know its a precious spot...

Have any of you guys skied up in the sandwich range?
