The only beer I drink these days has virtually zero alcohol, Beck's NA is pretty good. Back in the day I used to go to a bar that specialized in imports. They had a handful of beers that were high in alcohol content. The strongest was 24%. I would drink it almost like a shot, short glass with a draft "chaser". It was scary shit, it would sneak up on you. You'd be fine one minute, blotto the next. A friend of mine went to school in Plattsburgh. They would cross the border to pick up beer. A buddy and I drove up to visit him. I got turned onto Molson Brador, I think it's 6% ABV. It was for sale stateside for a while in a weaker version. I would always grab a case whenever I was in Canada.

I've tried some in the 24-27% range. Not really enjoyable. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should.

yeah, sounds pretty gross.

There are very few spirits that I find enjoyable about 50% alcohol. Really only certain Bourbons. I imagine a beer at 65% would be completely nasty. I can't say I've tried many over 12% that I've enjoyed all that much.

Agree 100%! I do love my beer. But the reason why I enjoy it is because I drink beer that I enjoy the taste of! I've found that for my own taste buds, there's a plenty of brew's in the 7-10% ABV range that I've tried that I do like (noted general category exception to that is when a brewery brews a mega hopped typically IPA in that range, those just don't work for my pallate!), especially Stouts and Porters with some barrel aging.

Most beers in the "extreme" range (I'll define that as 15% ABV and higher), frankly just don't do it for me taste wise. Afterall, the majority of them aren't intended to be consumed in a pint glass, but rather a Brandy snifter. And if I'm going to grab a snifter, there's a whole host of options of OTHER beverages that I'm going to pour in there, that are far more likely to keep my pallate happy, than a "beer" that has a proof more often associated with a distilled spirit!

I do get a kick out of most weekend afternoons during ski season when I'm at my "usual" post skiing bar, The Station Taproom on the 2nd floor of Mount Snow's main base lodge. They have 18 micro's on tap, and very rarely when a Keg is kicked does it get replaced with that exact same brew, so their chalkboard where they keep a list of what's on tap, along with it's % ABV, changes very often. As a result, the last few seasons since the Station opened, I've been lucky enough to be able to try lots of micro's that typically I wouldn't have bought on my own! The majority of the time, you'll find atleast a 1/3 of what they're pouring with an ABV between 9-12% (usually served in a smaller wine glass) and nothing on the board below 5% ABV. Most Saturday afternoons, sometime between about 2:30 and 4PM when the crowds are greatest there, you can overhear some typically mid 20 something male with a few of his friends come up to the bar, initially ask for say a Guinness or Heineken (you won't find either of those on tap there, ever), and then ask the bartender, "what's good?" - (98% of the time which illicts a sarcastic look from the bartender and some laughs from us "regulars") and then a decent amount of time end up turning into "I'll have the strongest beer you've got" in an attempt to prove that he's more manly a man than his friends - often the look on his face after the 1st sip is quite entertaining!

I'm lucky enough there (and at a few bars by my house too! :) ) to have bartenders that have served me enough to know what I like, and as a result, trust them when they tell me that I should try such and such a new beer on tap or that I shouldn't try a different one! I drink the beers that I drink because I like their taste, not because I'm trying to prove how "extreme" a beer drinker I am! I've got no problems at all if I'm hanging out with friends and I'm drinking say a Heady Topper from the Alchemist (which I really do like, especially in the summer!) and someone else is say drinking a PBR or a Miller Lite - if everyone's happy with what's in their glass, then all is good in my book!

Sounds undrinkable. I for one can't even stomach the micros that are in the 7+ range. I like beer cold and drinkable. If I want something storng to sip on I'll pour a glass of bourbon.

Honestly I find myself drinking less and less as I get older.

Ewwww. No thanks. I don't need to drink a beer I need to use a mixer for to cut it down. I tried a barleywine (forgot the name) that was around 15% and it i already too much. Keep it between 5-10 and I'm goot. If I'm gonna drink a malt beverage that's 40% abv then give me a ice cube and some 25 year Mccallan;s or something else along that ilk.
