Date(s) Skied: 4/4/06
Resort or Ski Area: Belleayre, NY
Conditions: Powder, Packed Powder, dust on crust
Trip Report:
I decided that I was not going to let ski season get away that easily so I decided to head up to Belleayre after school today. All day was gloomy and rainy here in the Hudson Valley, but I was still determined to make turns.
School got out at 2:00 and I hopped in the car and was at Belleayre by 2:45...enough time for a run or two. Belleayre was open until 4 and there was no way I was going to pay money for an hour of skiing, so I planned to hike.
Driving up "Belleayre Hill" I saw some weird looking white stuff on the ground. Could it really be snow? By the time I was in the parking lot I could tell that there was around 2 inches of new snow where it had not drifted.
I threw on my boots and enjoyed a nice quiet hike. I only saw 1 other skier fly past me while I was hiking up.
When I got to the top, I saw a few more people taking their last run. I threw on my skiis and enjoyed some really nice turns in fresh snow. Fresh tracks were plentiful because, as I later found out, there were only about 6 people there all day! Where the wind had drifted the snow there was easily 4". Not the fluffiest stuff, but I didn't care.
Kind of ironic.... today the woods had more coverage than some weeks in January. But that's the Northeast for ya.
