MT. MANSFIELD not to be confused with stowe proper. lift assisted slack country. gets more snow than MRG and has some of the steepest stuff my ass has ever gone over. granted i have only done MRG about 5 times since i was 5 but this area has the goodies.

My list, but I'd reverse 4 and 5.

Since they can't make much snow how are good snow conditions an automatic for MRG?

I think he meant for the sake of discussion, assume good snow conditions.

I should have said that better. I did not want bad conditions to matter so what I wanted to say is...vote as if it was a good snow day for the mountain.

there is one place you a missing.

I said that YOU have skied. I have never skied mansfield.

Jay by far.

Well, it is a northeast ski forum. BTW I would love to ski the slides on a pow day!

although i've skied stowe once and it would obviously rate higher than most on there, it was only partially open and any woods skiing would've been akin to inviting Kevorkian over for a checkup. I very much want to get back there when i can truly check it out.

LOLz. Though JD meant this tongue in cheek, I will not respond in kind. But rather, in all seriousness, Jay is not on par with mountains like Stowe and Mad River for challenge. Jay is about powder and trees and that is it. Jay DOES have some hairy stuff off the map (even within the boundaries) but does not have the all around top to bottom challenge that Stowe and MRG offer. Stowe is steeper with hairy trees than Jay, but sometimes it is more fun blowing through moderately pitched open glades than hacking out tight trees.

Hard not to, but I must ask about the qualifier. Total mountain or on map only? My list is for total mountain. My list is also lacking because I have never skied Smuggs, haven't skied Loaf since I was an intermediate, and have never skied Whiteface. My experience would list out the Northeast's most challenging mountains that I have skied (in no particular order) as:

MRG, Stowe, Cannon, Jay, Bush

They each have their unique aspects that make them challenging in varying degrees. Some are more challenging than others in certain areas. I think MRG and Stowe are the most consistent in terms of challenge. Smuggs would be up there had I skied it but ALLSKIING's parameters are mountains we have personally skied. Other areas outside of those top five would include Wildcat, Saddleback, Magic, and Killington. Haven't skied the Loaf since I was an intermediate cruising on blue squares but that would be included in there somewhere for sure.

1) Jay stand out as #1 to me due to the sheer variety of expert terrain and incredible woods that by far out rank anything in the east to me.

2) Stowe...without saying, but having only spent 3-4 days there, there is much more to be found there

3) Sugarloaf....just wish it wasn't 5-6 hours from my home.....

4) MRG.....simply because a single chair and minimal snow-making truly make it a ski experience one will soon not forget

Being a hard core woods skier these rank in my top 5. #5 is probably a toss up with a number of mountains so I'll keep it to 4.

In the east:

1.Stowe - slack country trumps MRG
2.MRG - if talking purely on map, this is #1
3/4Sugarloaf /Sugarbush - interchangeable
5. Jay

Out west

1. A Basin
2. Aspen Highlands
3. Snowmass.......while most consider it an intermediate paradise, the cirque and HVW have the goods
4. Breck
5. Vail
