Utah is HIGH on my list.....but given life circumstances it'll be years before I do it.

Of all the places you can go out west I think it's the most accessible and affordable. Not to mention having arguably the best skiing in the US.

You can go there for a long weekend..and only use one or two vacation days..that's what credit cards are for..ask AndyZee about that.

Although Jackson Hole has some real steep terrain..I've heard Kicking Horse and Squaw Valley are more challenging. Big Sky has some really hairy terrain from the Tram and the Hike-To A-Z chutes were over my level when I lived out there. Messing up on one turn could be disastrous. I would rate Hunter as more challenging than most of Southern Vermont...it's a pretty steep mountain...and 10+ foot drop-offs from a deep snowmaking base on the sides of the trail can make a big yardsale catastrophic..lol..I've seen people slide right off the side of the trail into a snowgun...actually that happens all the time at Blue mountain as well. No matter how mellow or steep the terrain is..there are snowsnakes lurking everywhere..even in the parking lot..a big reason why I wear a helmet..along with 300 pounds guys with frozen jeans and an Eagles jacket..who drank a half pintt of Southern Comfort on the lift..

If you book early, you can get a pretty good deal

understood, but with new mortgage, a healthy amount of dough spent on gear and a wedding next year to finance, the lady would kill me. Most likely if I took a trip to Utah, I wouldn't have to worry about financing a wedding

I'll make it out there someday. If I go, I want to go for a week and do it up right, just not in the cards/wallet for right now.

Bingo.

Problem with booking early for any destination is not knowing what the conditions will be. Your chances of having excellent conditions several months out are greater for Utah than they are just about anywhere else.

To me, that's one of Utah's biggest advantages...the fact that you can book your trip months in advance and have a reasonably high level of confidence that you'll have great snow.

If sticking to just Colorado, what about Crested Butte?? I've never been, but I've heard about the extreme skiing competitions held there.

You should definitely hit up Jackson Hole...I'm taking my 6th trip there this winter and might combine it with Montana and Utah. Some people describe Jackson Hole as a perfect ski area due to it's consistent pitch. There are really only a few scary runs inbounds..most of the terrain is just nice steep 30-35 degree fall line skiing. The Hobacks are 2500 vert of wide open bowls and gullies..and the other lower faces to the skiers left of The Hobacks are sweet as well.

90% of Crested Butte is very tame. The extreme competition is held on the terrain below the surface lift at the far skier's right boundary. That has some serious pitch to it but it's not like Snowbird where the whole mountain is advanced skiing. Crested Butte also has the Aspen problem since it's quite close to Aspen as the crow flies.... they really don't get that much natural snow.
