Haha...throwing Stowe in there is what threw me off the sarcasim scent! Now, if you had said Stratton, I'd have picked up on the wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

My bad. I was going for subtle, hence Stowe. Plus Stowe, even though its a great mountain, is not a secret by any stretch so I don't feel bad redirecting people to it.

Stowe and Killington are actually my standbys for recommendations to the average once or twice a year skier. I feel like if I send my friends, coworkers and extended family to Stowe or Kmart, I am keeping the good stuff (SB, MGR & Jay) secret while still recommending a very nice mountain that offers a good mix of skiing and apres ski. I would feel a bit rotten sending them to places like Okemo or Stratton.

Oh I'm sorry, was I supposed to be honest and advertise to the whole world that Sugarbush and MRG are the best kept secret in VT skiing? Why don't we start a bus route from NYC to Waitsfield while we are at it and bring everyone and their mother there this winter, then we can be sure to get no fresh tracks and stand in Killington-style lift lines! :spin:

Of course Okemo sucks. Everyone who doesn't drive a Range Rover or match colors on their ski gear knows this. I'm just trying to do some smoke and mirrors to keep the crowds away from my favorite places. Sorry for the confusion.

Actually, there used to be a Greyhound called the "Sugarbus Express" that rolled directly from Park Avenue to Sugarbush. That was back in the Mascara Mountain days.

Vermont. Almost a silly question, not that there's not great skiing to be found in the rest of New England and New York...

Depends on what makes it best. Skiing in many New York areas still has that home town local vibe. The megaski corporations erased that from several Vermont mountains. Is there a mountain like Plattekill in Vermont? Magic maybe? I honestly don't know as I have not been to a lot of places.

Suicide Six, Middlebury Snowbowl, Roundtop, Cochran, Magic, even MRG to an extent. Yup. They still exist.

This question cannot be objectively asked without perameters or criteria. It's too subjective asked the way you did. Of course the fact that a good chunk on the folks on here, ski in Vermont, sort of adds to that, but that's okay, I'm sure someone will at least joke and say it's Rhode Island!

A better question would be to ask what's your favorite state to ski in because there is NO CORRECT answer to this question. Each state is totally different and each skier and rider is totally different.

I'm curious as to why you feel that Maine would be the best if it had more ski areas. Don't get me wrong, I lived in Vermont close to 13 years and have spent just shy of two here in Maine and can definitely say, Maine is my preference for living year round.

I guess for me, it all boils down to natural snowfall and Vermont has every part of the northeast beat in the catagory outside of maybe the plateau west of the Adirondacks, which is a waste as there's no decent mountains there.

Now, if for some reason the weather patterns shifted such that the Whites got as much as Northern Vermont and development was allowed on the 4500+ mountains in the region, NH would take the cake. Everytime I drive through there I always think to myself, what a waste of huge mountains. Though I'm sure the backcountry purists love it that way.

I haven't been to Wildcat since they took out the Gondi. It I should get back with some good snow are theere are some good slckcountry opportunities.

I do always enjoy the view of Wildcat from some of the those really "ok" places to ski in NH. Like:

It's such a shame that NH doesn't have any good places to ski.

Man why do I feel like all my words have been getting twisted lately? Where did I say there aren't any good places to ski?

Personally I prefer Vermont. It has more better ski resorts. NH isn't bad, but they don't have as many ski resorts I enjoy as much as VT. Not a big fan of Loon, or Tenney, while there pretty much isn't a ski resort in Vermont that I don't care for (Maybe Ascutney if I had to pick one). If you like those resorts, then fine by me.

And I'd like Maine the most if they had more ski resorts, cuz I'm going off the awesome ski resorts they already have, ie the river, the loaf. It just sucks cuz whenever we want to go to a place like sugarloaf we gotta make a long trip out of it since it takes over 5 hours to get there.

O yea as far as backcountry goes, never have had the chance, at least not in new england. so i am basing this strictly off of lift serviced resorts

Hey, I'm just having some fun. If you're stuck in 29 Stumps, you're a far better man than I'll ever be. Stay safe on your deployment.

Describing NH from experiences at Loon, WV and WC don't really do it justice. It's a little like painting VT with the Killinington paintbrush.

Yea i figured, but its hard to read sarcasm through text. You referred to the palms as stumps, I presume you've been here before?

And as far as killington goes, i realize a lot of people here don't like it, but its one of my favorite places. It has a lot of challenging trails, (not all of them on the map) and people say its too crowed, well i've always come on the weekends, and i've probably been there at least 10 times, and i barley(sp?) ever have to wait in line for anything except the K-1 gondola, you just got to know where to ski

Never been to 29 Stumps, but one of my Paramedic partners was there as a Corpman.

I had an A41 pass the last several seasons and ended up at K-mart a fair amount. (That, after I had sworn off the place for nearly 20 years.) There is some good skiing to be had there, if you know your way around. Unfortunately, you can spend a lot of time on crowded, uninteresting terrain if certain trails and lifts aren't open. I don't really consider it representitive of Vermont.
