Perhaps your perspective changes as a parent...

It certainly does...it made me realize that my wife and I are my kids biggest role models, and always will be. As long as I do my job well, I have nothing to worry about.

And when a kid like Bode (he is still a kid) makes comments like these, we all discuss it as a family. We talk about the athlete's right to live his/her life as they please, just like any other American. And we discuss their constitutional right to free speech. And we discuss that this is an entertainer, not a role model.

And then we discuss the way our family conducts our business and what is acceptable for us. And my kids know that drinking and skiing is dumb.

I don't expect athletes to be role models for my kids; they're athletes who entertain and that's their only job as far as I'm concerned.

FOr all the reasons people are shunning him, I think he is great. I am tired of the progressive "pussification" of our youth.

The best way to learn that an oven is hot, is to touch it yourself. We cant keep cramming new video games up their butts to protect them from the real world. People drink, and Bode is just a person. People drink when they ski, thats why there are bars in lodges, Bode is just another skiier, who happens to be real fast, and he drink when he skiis. He was honest, its not an every day thing.

I look up to Bode myself, and I'm about his age, and I drink and ski...sometimes, sometimes even while rec racing and it is exciting to know that Bode is just like me. Now go grab that X-Box or PS2 from your kid, smash it and let your kid have his/her first beer with their pop, then take them for a day on the hill and forget all this adolecent pampering that is turning your boys into women and your girls into mice

EDIT: To clarify, Discussing with your family is not a pussification, its what we need more of.

Hmmm....very well said. You make some fantastic points. Of course as a 32 year old parent, I'm still just a kid so what you expect, you old fart...? ;)

Seriously though, thanks for your post.

We actually did discuss this topic a bit on Wednesday.

It's rare to find someone who's more over the edge on this issue than I am.

I left out the hard part...knowing that no matter what you teach them, they have to learn from their mistakes anyway. Experience is still the best teacher.

We all go through it...all we can do as parents is equip them the best way we know how to deal with life and then be there to pick them up and dust them off when they fail.

My parents have gone through several vacuum cleaners doing precisely this for me...

To me skiing drunk is no
better then driving drunk.

Agreed - however I've had arguments in forums before about this subject. It seems that drinking is a "featured" activity at most ski resorts due to the fact that they place bars at all base lodges. It's definitely a conflicting message:

Come to XXX resort, have a good time, go skiing/riding, and drink up/spend a lot of money at out base lodge bar.

A bar with a ski resort promotes drinking and skiing no more than a bar with a parking lot promotes drinking and driving.

Absolutely. I say we ban parking lots. All bars should be drive through or car service.

I don't see a conflict, as long as the message is corrected to "go skiing/riding, and then drink up/spend a lot of money at our base lodge bar."
skiing then drinking alcoholic beverages --

drinking alcoholic beverages then skiing -- :x

That's why its called Apres Ski

Apres - French word meaning After

Simple. 8)

What do you call the barflies who are there from 11:00am on? Apres-Breakfast?

Seriously, I see the bar fill up starting at that time. That constant image does alot more damage to a kid's perception of society than anything Bode Miller says.

The drive through-window has to be enlarged, and the late fees on returns will be horrendous, but sure, why not?

On topic, seems to me if your child's life is seriously affected by a comment made by an athlete (or anyone else but you, for that matter), then you have failed in your job as a parent much more than they have failed as a role model.
