2006 Trip Report #: 43

Resort: Burke Mountain

Conditions: MG/LG

Weather: Cloudy and cold. Temps in the 10’s to 20’s.

Trip Report: Die hard day. Did I regret it? No way. It is better than the skiing at Burke in June. The lifties asked me how the “ice was,” but it was decent. They lost a lot of snow….depressing to ride up the lift with grass and ice showing, but everyone was very optimistic about the snowstorm. Anything groomed was OK, and anything not groomed was death…

No worries though. I dropped the main boards in the mountain ski shop for some TLC while I used my rock skis. They did a great job on the skis….and fast service.

After riding up the HSQ, I headed to the top. First run was down Carriage Road, which had good cover, except for the left side of the upper knoll, which had a few dicey spots. From here I cut on to Lower Powderhorn, which was nasty with only one cat track down it. You had to be careful. On the lower knoll, you had to stay to the left and even then it was spotty.

Next run was down Upper Bear Den to Willoughby and down Lower Bear Den to Lower Warren’s. The cover, as usual, was pretty good.

I hopped onto the Poma and headed up. I noticed that they had “UNLOAD HERE” signs more conspicuous than usual. I didn’t get it until I was up almost to the top. Just beyond the knoll, there was some very thin cover and some grass that you had to ski over. It was doable, but a bit sketchy. The cover on Upper Warren’s was deceivingly soft. It appeared to be firm, but when you got on it, it was nice and soft. You could easily get an edge. I skied it down to Lower Fox’s.

Riding back up to the top, I decided to do Powderhorn, which was dicey. When I got to the lower knoll, I stayed right to find very thin snow and one spot where you almost had to jump over the grass. Lower Toll Road was almost pavement and in one spot was.

From here, I decided to take a spin down the Dippers. They were in great shape and the BMA crew was hard at work putting the race fencing up for this coming week’s Eastern Cup.

Last run was down Upper and Lower Willoughby to the base. I did three cool down runs—one on each of the lower runs. I got cranking on Bunker Hill only to discover a nasty section of ice and grass that I narrowly avoided. Other than that, not bad.

So not a bad day…the clouds rolled in during the afternoon and snow began at about 7:00pm or so….there was about an inch on 114 at 8pm or so.
