Burton Snowboards moving to Austria

Burton is moving their sponsored rider, custom board manufacturing to Austria (maybe 1-2% tops of their overall board production per year). Their main production lines have been manufactured overseas for years now. The board R&D will still take place in VT.

Just another example of the current business climate in VT, although this move from Jake Burton, someone who historically has been very pro-VT, has to send some shock waves through some folks in Montpelier

That's a bummer. I can't say it's that surprising though. It's a shame...a lot more jobs are leaving VT these days.

just playing devil's advocate here...first, its a public corporation now, so for the most part, (however unfortunate it is) the bottom line rules. 2nd, the company employed and still employs a lot of people in Vt. 3rd, wasn't it more happenstance that he was in Vt. when he was coming up with the original designs in Stratton and Londonderry. He could have been elsewhere and the company would have been in a different state. Also, Burton has already been making boards in Austria for 25 years. So, I ask you, what did Vt. really do for Burton? Isn't it and doesn't it continue to be... the other way around?

Everyone loves capitalism and competition and globalization for its having improved quality of living and given us so many great (and significantly cheaper) gadgets and toys and freedoms and tech to explore the world, etc. But when it hits close to home, everyone says its a shame. It is no more a shame than Americans somewhere else in the country having long been laid off and reallocated to other forms of employment so we can have cheaper tech, cheaper clothing, etc, etc etc.

Vermont gave him the vision to become what he is today. I don't understand your last sentance.

Burton is a private, not a public company. It's too bad for the employees that are losing their jobs, maybe they can take their skills to up and coming Rhythm Snowboards and Rome which are VT based. My guess is that Burton makes more on apparel than boards, boots and bindings.

You guys know what this is? It's the original Burton factory located in Londonderry VT no more than 2 miles from Magic. Jake tested many boards on the slopes of Magic. You'd think he could help out a bit,......nothing. Believe me, i've tried. Not asking for much, as little as a testimonial, blurb on the Burton website, ANYTHING. All I get back is the typical generic response BS. Thanks for nothing Burton.

Burton Sucks all around, IMHO (except the Fish, of course)

I'm pretty fond of their thermal shirts actually. There's like one non-idiotic looking one a year (in plain black instead of bright colors).

Makes a great midlayer for me, and is pretty comfortable to wear normally as well. It's good in a wide range of temps, and holds up well.

I wouldn't pay the $50 they're supposed to cost, but for $20 on the end of season sales, it's nice.

At ~400 employees still in Vt. Burton is still probably one of the larger employers in the state.

They are not in the top 20 but respective to Vermont their size is nothing to sneeze at, for sure

Now that the dust has settled abit I don't think this is a big deal other than for the folks who will lose their jobs. The company will remain in Vermont. The politicians have jumped on it but I think that ever since Act 250 was enacted Vermont it is well known for not being a very friendly state to open a new large business.

OK OK OK, you got me, their socks are actually pretty good too.
And I do love going into the Burton boutique in NYC's SoHo and watching families completely gear up for hundreds more than if they went a mere mile away.
heh heh heh, how about a new term?
When someone sets up roots, builds themselves up with your help, and then takes off, you could say "yeah, that persons a real jake-off", kinda catchy, no?

I believe

It's his company and can do what he wants with it. Is it sad to see people lose jobs because of this yes. Move on folks remember this is U.S of A. Cheaper labor overseas we can not compete with. Hmmmmm. I try to buy American products as much as i can, but the wallet says take the best deal. Remember this is U.S of A. We have gotten what we've asked for. Time for a change no doubt.
