For curiosity's sake I am posting a picture that I took from the base of Camelback on sunday. My son and I where visiting Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park and we decided to look at Camelback which still had a patch of snow on the Asp trail. The rest of the mountain was 100% snowless:sad:

Yes it's in P.A

Now, now don't be:uzi:  :smash: , it's got an 800' vertical drop and two HSQ lifts. Actually some of the runs are quite steep near the top, but the runs are very short.

The vert is measured in terms of "below sea level".

Composing myself after falling off my chair:lol:

You would be suprised just how steep the lower part of Montage Mountain in Scranton is, they have legitimate double black diamonds with about 500' of vertical, and the ice makes them much harder to ski.

That place looks tiny. What's the vert?

The place is incredibly tiny. If you were to look at the lifts, you might think it was big, (2 HSQ's) but it really isn't. You can see the summit lodge so easily. By the way, how was that indoor ski area.

Actually the place is not really that small and the photo only shows about 40% of the ski area which is spread out along a ridge with 33 trails.

I only wish the pocono's had an indoor ski area, I went to an indoor water park.

Montages one double diamond trail IMO is steeper for 500' vert then anything on liftline or national at Stowe.

For a place where the top of the mountain is relatively flat and the bottom portion is really steep, these warning signs are needed:

Damn, when I first saw that pic up top, and I have visited Camelback, not to ski, but just passing by, I was tempted to goof on the mountain. But no, instead I just kept my mouth shut in this thread and started another one; http://forums.alpinezone.com/8568-definition-mountain.html#post88882 , but damn, you guys are showing no mercy :smash: Funny thing about Camelback, they have big mountain crowds, prices and attitudes. It's like Hunter in PA. Or at least from the little bit I saw, never actually skied there.

The steepest 500 ft. of vertical I could find was 16 degrees. Goat is 28...
For 200 ft. of vertical though it was 27, but heck you can just go straight for 200 ft. of vertical.

The two major differences between Stowe and Montage are:

1) The upper mountain portion of Montage (50% of the mountain) is flat. You can go from skiing a green trail to being on a double black if you are not carefull and ignore the warning signs.

2) Stowe gets 250" of snow anually whereas Montage gets about 60" anually. This makes the steep portions of Montage icy and frequently dangerous. The steep trails are in a valley and recieve very little sunlight. You could go straight, but that could be dangerous and the trails usually have large moguls on them.

At Montage the lodge is actually in the middle of the mountain. You drive up a really steep acess road to get to the mid mountain base lodge.

For an otherwise boring place, the steeper lower part of the mountain would keep me coming back if I lived there.

What im saying is If you took the steepest part of Liftline or Goat, they wouldnt be as steep as White Lightning. But in general they are much steeper because of length. But you really should shut the hell up. Dont you feel special for having google earth and making a 16 year old kid look stupid.

Wow, calm down. I guess it depends on vertical, but actually after looking at a topo a 100 vertical ft. range of white lightning is probably steeper than anything inbounds at Stowe. Its wicked short so it probably doesn't feel that steep, but still pretty freakin good for Penn.

And BTW: I'm only 17 and I'm using terraserver.com:p

I skied Montage many times when I lived in the Scranton area...and for what it is...it aint all that bad. I do however don't think I would ever even mention Stowe in the same sentence as Montage. 500' of vert, unless its 45 degrees isn't all that much, and even then...but when you live in Scranton..its like super easy to get to that place, and in the summer they have nice concerts there so...(lease when I lived there). I saw a lallapalooza there...2 or 3rd one..
