Bigelow I knew about. It was almost developed instead of Sugarloaf. I did not know there was a bid to make Maine the host of the Olympics. It certainly would have been interesting to see what that resort would have been like. With Flagstaff lake at the base of the mtn it certainly would have made for an interesting year round resort ... if they could get the people up there.

NELSAP is great - unless you happen to own the property that the ski area was on and you got people climbing up your back yard... :)

Black Mountain is practically across the street from Maple Valley. Would been cool to have two areas that close to the weekend place. Then again, if two areas were that close, we probably never would have been able to afford it.....

^ I heard some people talk about some very skiable lines in there. A bear to get into though. I think I actually read a TR (not in this forum) about it.

Theres a pretty prominent slide ride behind the Equinox Resort.

I'd imagine skinning up the Skyline Drive would be the easist way of getting there.

A ski area on the flank of MT Jefferson! Sorry hippies, if they built it people would have gone there. It would have been pretty fun!

I'm with you

Sorry hippies, would've loved to seen the Willard Basin, NH; Equinox, VT; and Bigelow, ME projects all happen.

Three more 2000+ vert ski areas on bad ass mountains for New England? Yes please

The Equinox looks like it would have been sick and it drops right into town. It'd be like a western resort.

my understanding of both Equinox and the entire ridge extending north to Dorset Mountain is much of the land is owned by nuns and that was part of the challenge in developing them. The whole ridge could be one MASSIVE ski development, biggest in the state I believe. Growing up with a ski home in Ludlow, our family would go over to Manchester fairly often during the summer months. Looking at that mountain range and dreaming of what they could be was the most exciting part of those day excursions for me.

Two Questions

1. Is Equinox the biggest in S. VT?

2. What kind of Vert would it have all the way down?

Also the proposal for skiing off of north twin would have been perfect. The snow lays in there real deep I would imagine, similar flow as Bretton Woods with even quite a bit more elevation. The terrain would have been perfect, plenty steep. It has the potential to rival anything in the East I think. DAMMIITTT!!!!

1. Second highest, at 3848 feet, after Stratton at 3940.
2. On the east face, you'd ski from 3800 down to 1500 or maybe 1200 with some flats at the bottom. So say 2600 vertical feet. There are a lot of steeps, so much that it would be hard to make an intermediate route from the top. The west face also offers 2400 verts, but the base would be remote.

My favorite fantasy mountain in New England is the Mt. Blue subpeak of Moosilauke, although I would put the bulk of my area further north than the face that was proposed for the tramway. That face is too steep for a mainstream ski area. My area would have 2,800 vertical feet, all northeastern exposure, and good accessibility to I-93.

North Twin looks just awesome when approached from the north. That mountain has always had a drool factor.

Sadly that sounds exactly like the problem Big Squaw Mt faces. I would love to get up to Moosehead Lake in either the winter or summer but its just too far.

Well, from NJ your not likely to drive to SL anyway. The drive time is about the same 4+hrs or so from Boston. And Big Squaw is closer to Bangor (than the 2hrs to SL) which give's it a pretty good local draw. The Plum Creek development is going to put a lot of new high end vacation homes up there. I think there is a lot of hope for Big Squaw if the jerk-off who owns it would sell to someone who cares and has some cash to put into it.

I was just recently home in DF Maine and decided to go check out my dads collectables, he collects Griswold, and other stuff from the years gone by, and I was reminded that my grandfather was one of the original founders of Big Squaw. My dad has some of the original stock papers (or whatever they were called). Along side those were some nice worthless 1970's or 80ish stock papers for Sugarloaf Corp that my grandmother had bought.
