Assuming that Cannon will receive the projected 18 - 20 inches, will that be enough to privide a decent cover for such runs up there as Kinsman Glades and Tramline?
I haven't been to Cannon this season, but I'm sure that the above mentioned trails are just rocks , ice and stumps right now.

I'm planning to take Thursday off and I'm getting really stoked to ski something steep and with good cover.

From what I daw driving by a couple weeks ago, it's going to take more than 18-20 to open tramline.

I ski Cannon every weekend as I did this past weekend. The woods are starting to fill in.Some of my friends skied at Mittersill and said it was ok.As far as Kinsman glade goes,If we get 20 inches, pretty much everything thing will be skiable with the possible exception of tramline. Most of it will be covered pretty good but there is a few sections with rocky drops that need a lot of snow to fully fill it in.But that's really been the case since it opened. As far as I'm concerned,if we get 2 feet,it will all be good!! By the way, there might be more than that falling. Here's the latest from the NWS:
A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM
WEDNESDAY TO 6 AM EST THURSDAY.
SNOWFALL TOTALS WILL RANGE FROM 18 TO 30 INCHES FROM LATE TONIGHT
THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

I haven't been in the notch this winter so I don't know what's on the ground currently but I hiked down the kinsman glade this summer and spoke to some Cannon folks about it at the Boston Ski Show. From their input and my observation - I'd think 4'+ is the requirement - with some of that on the bottom rock hard/ice snow - I couldn't believe the small trees, trunks, boulders, fallen big trees, etc that littered the trail especially in the lower 3rd of the run. I guess if it's open be careful about unseen obstructions under the snow!

Wind

I'm thinking of heading up to Cannon on Thursday as well, but I'm worried about the wind. Do you think wind hold will be a problem at Cannon?
Most forecasts are saying the winds will be about 20 mph. Is this enough to close the Tram?

If they closed the tram because of 20mph winds, it would never be running. It takes way more then that to shut the tram down.

my rule is go to cannon, see what the conditions are wind/snow wise - the guys in the parking lot are usually very straight and continue to BW which is only another 30ish minutes if it looks dicey. snow will be better and wind is as they advertise never an issue!

YES.

Is that the forecast for at 4,000 feet? What direction?

the NWS website isnt letting me see the forcast for the higher elevated places, but down in franconia, it says winds of 20-25.....so around 40 at the summit could be a good guess? I say wind holds are definitly a possibility....

tramline would be very unlikely considering this snow is falling on not much base. tramline doesn't just need a lot of snow to open, it needs a lot of base. same with kinsman, though depending on current base, kinsman may be an outside shot. who cares though, everything else and then some will be open and skiing great. wind hold may be an issue but it takes a lot of wind to lock that tram down. generally if cannon isn't running the tram, you probably aren't getting a chair lift to any other ski area's summit in the area either.

cannon will def. be blowing harder than 20 mph. With enough snow kinsman may open (although not right away) because it always seems to catch incredible amount of blown snow. I'm just happy because the real stuff will be skiable finally.

This is from the Cannon website:
If you don’t want to chance driving today, Thursday should be the best day in a couple of years, and don’t be scared off by talk of wind- Cannon does not get hit so much by northwesterly winds.

I hope that is true. I am just hoping for summit access tomorrow.

If you want to ski powder a better best is continue on to Burke (about 45 mintues). Bretton Woods does not have a steep enough pitch to support deep powder skiing therefore a lot of stuff needs to be groomed out. There may be some pow pockets here and there. I'd rather hike a mtn 5 times for pow turns than pay for lift served at BW on a powder day.
