I have no idea why they don't use the Tram. That is how people ski all over Europe. you ride a tram up to the mountain where you find the snow. Also, there are more than enough facilities up top to service the amount of skiers. IF K opened late October. Cannon could have as well. Virtually the same lift base elevation and top elevation. K had no facilities this year.

Yeah, getting only 250-350 an hour up the hill is a great way to open for the year. Europe and US ski industries are very different.

R u suggesting that more than 300 per hour will actually go up the mountain? Are you suggesting european trams are different somehow. Last I checked there about the same size a to the same speed.

Trams are sweet and all but as the primary lift early season it would suck.
There was one year, somewhere back in the 90's that they opened on the top and used the tram to shuttle. It was really early, like Halloween early. I don't recall too much but can remember it did NOT suck

The uphill capacity for the tram is listed at 770/hr. Probably lower in real world conditions, but significantly higher than the number you made up. Your contrarian act is really tiring btw.

Tram would be ok for some of us skiers, but a pain for the mountain. Rentals, the f&b hub, ski school, and a two lodges for people with early season fatigue are all located back at the Peabody.

I always think the middle cannon/link to spookie combo that the hsq offers at first is pretty unsatisfying. I think the way they're doing it is probably smart and hopefully they don't get bit in the ass again.

For sure, I totally agree. But that is mostly a byproduct of long-term under utilization of the tram. It is an iconic piece of NH that runs in 4 seasons. Yet they have decided not to develop all of the amenities you described over by the tram. You can't even get a beer at the end of the day on the tram side. So it won't work this year and probably won't is a foreseeable future.

And I totally agree with you that the tram base is under utilized in winter. There is not much over there for a beginner or lower intermediate if they were to base themselves over there.

Bring back a Banshee lift? I proposed it once before on one of those AZ challenge things that we never saw the answers for.

Just got a few comp tickets and can't wait to check things out. For whatever reason it's been 5 or so years since my last visit. I will definitely be hitting it up early season this year.

Couple things from me.Cannons earliest opening was Oct 31st in the 90's.I have the ticket somewhere. The tram was used to up/download tp access the cannonball quad.It worked quite well. They didn't offer ski school or rentals but there really was no need for them for the terrain offered and the time of year. This time of year however, there are many inversions and last night was one so the advantage of making just at the top is debatable.

Last year they opened a week late, the weekend after Thanksgiving. The issue with the snowmaking pipes was 2 years ago on Upper Cannon and was repaired for last season and while they were at it they installed snowmaking pipe on Paulys.
Somebody mentioned making snow on Rocket as well as Garys right now. They are making on Rocket and not Garys.I'll be there this weekend and get some feedback and report back.

Are you sure look at the pic up top? Sure looks like the snow goes down Gary's right by the start house. The website says Rocket which looks to be lit up in the pic too.

Do yourself a favor and wait for mid season. Cannon is too good to be skiing a WROD.

Thanks for the heads up. The tickets are free though so using one for a warm up is okay by me. It's too close of a mountain for me not to go back and enjoy a few times this year.

Tickets were donated for a fundraiser/auction from a radio station but they showed up the day after the event. Thankfully, no skiers at work so I took them lol. But I know you are pretty familiar with the mountain so if your willing to give me a little tour I would be more than willing to pass a long a ticket or two

No I'm not sure.I see that Mickys Margin has snow as does the top of Garys and over to the Zoomer lift.It looks like guns are going on Rocket behind the trees.I was only going by what Cannon had written.

Here is the answer on their website:

The new snowmaking technology that we've added this year is already paying off and this week we'll be making snow on Lower Cannon, Tossup, Gremlin, Brookside AND Gary's & Rocket! Look for skiing & riding off the Eagle Cliff, Brookside & Zoomer chairs for opening day

It should be a good opening with those runs much better than the old opening trail rollout. And I will miss it due family commitments.
