Marc and I had grand plans of epic snowfields, trails filled with powdery bumps, and bluebird skies. Lucky for us none of those fantasies came true.

The snowfields were sheets of ice.

The trails were never found.

And, to top it off it was cloudy with snow flurries.

Yeah, so we started off the day by skinning up some hiking trail to the top of Firescrew thinking that we could find the ski trail once we got to the top. We couldn't. Then we decided to hike over to Cardigan because the trails over there would be better marked. They weren't. After not finding the ski trail, we didn't look much because I was developing frostbite on my toe (yes again). So we skied down some hiking trail which we thought would lead us back to our starting spot. Yes, surprisingly enough it didn't. Finally after skiing down a never ending toboggan chute we ended up on some unplowed road. After skiing down that a little we finally got down to an actual road. Luckily there was a couple from down the street walking there dogs who brought us to their house, then gave us a ride back to our car (which was 45 minutes away). Because they were so nice to give us a ride you should buy this book:

http://www.nhbooksellers.com/books/random.htm
(It was written by the woman who gave us a ride back)

It was a pretty interesting day with about 50 ft. of actual skiing, but was fun nonetheless.

Here are some picture from the first half of the day before I found out I was getting frostbite and we couldn't find a trail. (Luckily I did get frostbite. Not even frostnip actually)

Marc pondering on which way to go. We obviosly chose the wrong way.

It was very steep here and I was hoping Marc would fall. Sadly for us he didn't:

"No, I'm far enough away that you won't hit me". Two seconds later Marc runs right into me:

Sorry to hear that. I have hiked Cardigan several times....I am 30 miles from it. Wish you would have asked me before you drove all that way.

It was still fun...

Seriously though, even though we barely got any skiing in I still had a ton of fun, and I'm pretty sure Marc did too.

It is a cool mountain and there were at one time ski trails and an AMC hut. The summit is very, very exposed as you know now and it really does not hold snow.

There are a bunch of ski trails that run up from the AMC Lodge, which is on the east side of the mountain. The ski trails don't run all the way to the summits of Firescrew or Cardigan. Both trails (Dukes on Firescrew, Alexandria on Cardigan) end at the respective summit slabs so you need to follow the cairns down to where the ski trails start. A map would be pretty handy for this. :)

Hah, a map. What purpose would that serve?

We had Goodman's book with us and still couldn't find crap.

AMC southern NH trail guide has a good map of cardigan, i don't think the ski trails are on there though but a good topo is helpful. i think i remember there being trail maps in the AMC lodge but i haven't been there in years and could be wrong. i know i have seen maps with the ski trails on them before.

Yes, the ski trails are on the AMC map. They're not always signed well in real life, but the maps are quite accurate.

Ha, yeah I still had a blast. It was more or less a winter hiking/ski mountaineering tour than anything else. The pictures I took of Austin skiing were on concrete packed powder. Next time we go over there were sticking to the damn ski trails if we can find the freakin things.

BTW, the Duke goes up Firescrew and Alexandria goes up Cardigan. We saw one sign for the Alexandria off the summit of Cardigan and it point towards a cliff that def. wasn't skiable and probably was too steep to scramble up even in dry conditions. Oh well. Won't stop us from touring again this weekend, that's for damn sure.

Like I said, the Alexandria trail doesn't start at the summit. You need to go down about 1/4 mile before you hit the junction. Alexandria ski trails starts there, well down in the trees. Getting from the summit to the start of the trail is left up to the reader.

You were so close it hurts...

I took my wife and my dog, Riley, up there on sunday. REI had a big hiking trip going on when we got there so we were in the middle of that headed up. This is the first time she ever used AT gear and loved it. We have shoed up and skied down before but she thought skins were alot easier. Should have taken a left headed up and taken the Cathedral ledge/forest or whatever its called and that would have dropped you off at the top of the Alexandrea trail. Lots of soft, fluffy snow. If you were really adventurous, you could have dropped into the drainage below Firescrew and hit some cliff jumps but the problem is that there isn't any good trail leading out. The Holt is there but its on the wrong side. Learned that one the hard way. You can ski some open stuff on the west side of the summit behind the ranger cabin. Not too bad. If you want to be really cool you could skin up the old ski area across from the fish hatchery. Look on a map/NELSAP and you will see an open trail covered in powder. You can kind of see it driving south on 93 looking off to the east. I have X-C to the bottom of it but it may still be good to ski........
