One year at Stowe, it was pointed out to me one of the original CCC trail markers. It was a small simple square piece of wood with a number on it, just off to the trailside, setback a few trees deep. Trails were not named.

Now yesterday at Wildcat I saw a similar numbered sign. It was placed as a diamond, instead of the horizontal orientation I saw at Stowe. What makes me think it's not a CCC sign is that it still has paint on it. Maybe it's to designate snowmaking pipe or trail location. Thoughts?

Shameless plug for a CCC ski trail site:

New England's Alpine CCC Ski Trails

In regard to the Wildcat signs, I've seen a bunch of them on various trails, which I believe correspond to snowmaking hydrants and pipelines. They appear to be somewhat old - perhaps a project undertaken years ago, but not kept up to date.

i dont know why i thought this but i saw some at whiteface and thought they designated some downhill mountain bike trails or something.

anyway, those CCC sites are cool. I didn't know too much about the CCC's ski trail cutting efforts before, interesting stuff.
