Update!

My wife tweaked her knee in VT this weekend and it became rather swollen. She saw the doctor yesterday and he couldn't beleive she skied most of the season on that knee.

She's having the ACL repaired and probably the miniscus (while they're in there) in about a month. While there's no "good" time to have this done, at least it's not during ski season. She's going to get fitted for one of those custom "robo" braces before she goes in for surgery.

Healing vibes to your wife. Guess this means she'll have to use her other foot to kick your butt and keep you in line!

Ditto the get well sentiments.

As a runner I am pretty familier with ACL injuries. Personally, I would have had the op sooner but she still has plenty of time to heal for the 09/10 season. Make sure she does lottsa PT after the op (when ready that is). Strong quads are critical to take the load off the knee area. But she must balance out the PT with hamstring work too . Imbalances in muscle group strength ALWAYS lead to future injuries.

Hope she has a quick recovery! I have had ACL surgery on both knees, one in 1997 and one in 2004. Both knees feel better than ever, seriously. No residual pain or problems, and I have never worn a brace (Dr. said I don't need it). As long as she is diligent with the PT and exercises at home, she should be all set for next season. I was skiing after 5 months both times (Dr. approved).

Thanks everyone! She's an occupational therapist and works with PT's daily. In fact, her boss is a PT. So she'll certainly be keeping up with everything. In fact, I'll probably be taking her to her first few sessions.

In hindsight, maybe she should have had this fixed sooner. But with ski season, and the purchase of the place up north, things have worked out OK.

Yeah, I'll be doing a lot of cooking and cleaning! We live in a raised ranch, so she'll probably be living on the lower level the first few days...maybe longer. Does that mean I can leave the bed unmade and not get busted?

She's a trooper though and is looking forward to this. She was a huge help after my diviated septum surgery. I spent a lot of time throwing up because the anastasia and then the pain pills didn't agree with me. So I'll certainly be there to help her out.

Vibes and good luck. I tore my acl three years ago, had it repaired and tore it again last summer. No surgery this time, lots of running biking weights, etc....skied 60+ days on it this year with zero problems. I may be rare case. Can do anything I could do with repaired / normal knee. Key is to build up the muscles around the knee...will give you support. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for the input! I appreciate it. How was your recovery after the surgery? Right now, she's leaning towards going with a cadaver tendon.

Recovery went well. I also went cadaver. I had surgery in June, was skiing on first weekend in November. I was riding stationary bike 4 after surgery. Walking with no problem 3 weeks after....I skied 60+ days that year without a brace (md said was not needed). Didnt really have an issue until I tore the graft last August. Decided against surgery for now and just spend a ton of time riding, running, lifting weights. Did use a brace this year and I can do pretty much anything on the knee including hoops and softball (which I do now wear a brace while playing). I guess at some point I will repair again...just never a good time.

If your wife does go cadaver, either to to PT or commit to do it on your own....it wont get stronger wihtout alot of effort.

Glenn,

I hope your wife is doing better. After Mrs Root's accident, we hired a cleaning company to pick up the slack.

Totally worth it.

Thanks for the info MonkeyBrook! That's good stuff regarding the recovery time. She's back and forth now between the cadaver and using her own tendon. Her surgery isn't unil late in July, so she's got time to think about it.

Root...that may not be a bad idea....

Glen: Usuing own tendon will be much longer recovery but is supposedly much more secure / stronger. In hindsight, maybe that is what I should have done. Missing a ski season is almost to much to bear. I have friend who tore two grafts that used own tendon...so I guess there are no guarantees. Whatever you guys decide, best of luck and happy recovery. My wife had the surgery yesterday. We were both worried she was going to be sick from the anesthesia, but she was fine. She's in a bit of pain, and has to take the pain meds every few hours. She's been able to get up on the crutches and move around bit which is good. I'm just doing the best I can to help her out and make sure she's comfy.

Quick healing + recovery vibes to Mrs. Glenn! I'm sure I'll be seeing her cruising down Thank's Walt effortlessly in a few months! :)
