Woah... Brettonwoods is going to have biking... again?

my info is not official, but i've heard this from a couple of different sources. i have no idea if lifts will be involved, but the terrain should be just right for recreational bikers.

It's not feasible to stay open at a loss, especially in a year in which you've already lost money. Most of the areas closing now are doing so because a) they don't have the skiers anymore (through the window or season pass), b) they don't have the help (people move onto their spring/summer jobs, imported help go back home), c) they don't have the snow why stay open with 3 muddy/slushy trails and annoy more people than you please).

Put it this way - if you had a) lost money working your job after your expenses b) were told you'd have to pay to show up to work your last few days of duty c) didn't have the resources to do your job effectively and d) were going to get criticized for your work regardless, would you go anyways? Heck no. Ski area owners have lives to live and bills to pay. With the exception of say Wachusett, very few are walking out of this season even at a break even level - you can't expect them to take money out of their pockets so that you can get another day or two out of your discounted season pass.

It's certainly a great time of the year to ski, but we have to be realistic too.

Mother Nature rules, but if possible we (Sugarbush) plans to stay open every day through Sunday, April 22 and reopen the final weekend of April for a final ? two days.

Reopening at LP, or the upper elevations at Ellen?

Mt Ellen closes after Sunday, April 1.

I know that. I just figured if LP was closing midweek and Ellen had a better surface on 28/29, they might fire up the GMX/Summit. Perhaps once it's closed for three weeks it's difficult to pull that off though...

http://www.vtskiandride.com..you can download the whole issue(pdf) check pg 24 for the article, "Late Season Storms Shift Action to LP". BTW, if your into Vermont skiing, Vermont Ski and Ride is an awesome free info source. :D

Actually it's not all that dificult but in light of all the reasons the Bush has decided to make LP the spring mountain it would not make any sense. For the last weekends, as Win has mentioned on several ski forums, skiing will be off the Valley Double as that is where the terrain is located that the extra snowpack has been blown, including your beloved Stein. After all, these trails almost face north :D

general get off my chest post.....
In the last few weeks I have been quite dismayed at the tone of some of the posts in here and even more so at skiMRV in regards to SV's decision to make LP the spring mountain this year. I know we all appreciate Win taking the time to post regularly. I am sure that when SV made the decision they knew there would be some bellyaching and that's totally okay, honest comments are why these forums were founded on. Unfortunately some crossed the line IMHO

Last Saturday I skied at the Bush on a Sat for the first time in years. I went back and forth using both the SBX and the shuttles experiencing the large crowd having a blast over at LP and the lack of one at Mt Ellen. It seems to me that so far, businesswise, it's a very smart decision. If the weather holds out this coming Sat should be a repeat with the pond skimming and Raggue Fest.

Additionally, there definately is some mojo forming over at skiMRV, regarding some new snow around Easter. Crazier things have happened. Anyone remember the bizzard during the Sugarbush Triathelon http://www.sugarbush.com/funandevents/event.asp?id=88 in maybe 1999(?). Don't stop your snowdancing just yet:lol:

I say let's enjoy the last month of the season and give SV a chance to catch their breath and then evaluate the situation. SV has a bunch of excellent and experienced managers who help make the Bush a great place.

Did you know the Bush is bringing back lift served mountain biking and putting in a Disc Golf course at LP this summer?
Sorry for the wordy post.

it is true grit, folks

who is going to ride their horse to the very last day?

Once we get the internationals in the picture ( the coming Brit groups over Easter Break..... and the going international workers who need to leave the country) settled, who will have staff and terrain to live up to the full mountain experience? Be able to offer lessons and keep people employed???? Be able to keep their guarantees to customers ... serve hot chocolate to 3 people after 3 pm? Beer to 3 more at 4 pm

gets pretty sketchy.

I think the "Last Man Standing" award is going to go the New England ski area who drags compressors and hose out of mothballs ( tonight???) to make snow in late March on a freak opportunity and save their learning/beginner area for late international tour bookings. Thats where the <last close date> reputation will lie.

Funny you mention the Brits coming. The only reason Cannon didn't close this weekend and is staying open till April 8th is because they have a group of 33 Brits coming.I told the MT manager it would have been a lot cheaper to buy them tickets and send them to Loon.I was pretty glad this weekend to hear the words "the British are coming".

It is dreary today with showers and soft snow down low. But it is firm up top and that is keeping the snow depth. It will be cool enough tonight to groom a number of the trails that would benefit from grooming , including Birch and Sunrise. Then things are looking interesting as winter returns later in the week. It is very probable that we will have some snow and maybe even 12"-18" in the mountains before the week has ended. The season is not over yet!
