Resort or Ski Area: Crotched Mountain

Conditions: Plentiful Manmade fresh groomed

Trip Report:

Well, 5 days after a bare hill due to the warmup, Midnight Madness was awesome. Their freshmade new snow was in perfect condition, hardly any crust anywhere, even on snowboard heavy hills.

Most major trails are open. The new side cut trails are not, but I suspect they will be backfilling these in with portable guns this week. Pluto's plunge is open and looks gorgiouse. Equinox is closed, but with signs of starting to cover it. Upper summit is fully covered. Meteor and Velocity, two blue downhill trails are fully covered, and felt perfect under ski with no scratchy spots at all. Comet Drop and Final Frontier have no snow made on them, unfortunately. My only disappointment was that the Milky Way connector trail was closed, but had portable guns pointed into it. All Green trails had good coverage, again, no crusties to be seen.

Crotched was busy, but certainly not crowded. Part of the lodge was filled with sleeping bags for people staying the night as part of a group trip. No lines, no waiting, and good fun by all.

Have been reading and researching skiing form, I can say it paid off. I felt MUCH more confident on the steeper blues then I have in the past. Some of it was simply reading past threads on these very boards. Thanks for that, I'm going to tackle Pluto's plunge next time the conditions are nice.

Only one snafu, however. In an utterly embarassing snafu while having a conversation, I um.. *blush* Accidently moved up to the lift chair position right behind the group in front of me, and umm. Err. They where surprised to find someone scooped into the chair before he could move back. :dunce: Think I accidentally scared the ever loving hell out of them.

As a side note, they have a new beer on tap in the bar, only remembered to me as being 'The Snowman Beer' becouse of the tap handle. I'm going to look up more info on it, it was AWESOME. It almost tastes like cream soda.

perfect timing, thanks for the report!

If it's not wet on Sunday, I'll take my littlest one. How are the green trails?

Incredibly nice. The corner bend under the lift on Supernova is a bit narrow, but besides that, no qualms about them at all. The largest downside of Galaxy that I never liked was the dip as it turns gets kinda packed and scratchy, but even that is perfect snow currently.

I didn't see any obvious racing going on, but on Meteor there where some temporary markers on the right side of the hill if you're lookup up meteor, with a group of people going thru them as tho they where practicing.

It was kind of annoying in a way, taking up have the top of meteor like that. :-D

Yeppers. That's the one. Some of the others are basically dummies guides to skiing for the kids, and alot of stuff online.

I also watched and observed alot of videos from here. :-D

I agree...just got this book for Christmas. Pretty thorough and not as dogmatic as the PMTS book I have can tend to be. I still have yet to do any of the drills, though.

Thanks for the TR, tcharron. Have you gone down any of the short blacks from the summit? I actually find Satellite Summit to be easier to go down than Moon Walk...

The only reason why I haven't tried going down Satellite Summit becouse the big drop-off it seems to have when looking at it from the top of the Galaxy lift area makes me nervouse. :-D

If it's comparable to Moon Walk, tho, I'll have to try it. At this point, it's mostly just getting the self confidence that I can handle it then anything else. I hadn't skied for 15 years+ untill this year, so I'm still gathering my self confidence.

Moon Walk was actually suprisingly nice on Friday night. Allot of loose snow on the turn. Allot of times portions of it get really scrapy, but no scraping it all friday night. I did scare the hell out of myself going to the top of Plutos Plunge from the lift down to Moon Walk, mostly becouse of a slight ice patch in the middle.

tcharron, you sound just like I did. I remember thinking "next time the snow is nice I'm going to try Pluto's Plunge". IMHO, if you can do Meteor you will not have much trouble with Pluto's or Satellite Summit. The steep part of Meteor is pretty much the same as the other two. I agree that Satellite Summit looks intimidating from below, but it's short and really not too bad. Velocity, for that matter, is similar to Satellite Summit too. That little section at the very top of Pluto's, above Moon walk is horrible. Always ice and it ends right where every younger skier/snowboarder hits that jump on Moonwalk.

When you do try Pluto's, I would start over by the lift. The other side starts with a very steep little drop that I have fallen on several time. I used to start over there so I didn't look like a clown falling right under the lift, but I never fall when I'm over by the lift.

I went to Waterville Valley yesterday and it was OK, but it really made me appreciate that sweet manmade snow at Crotched. Waterville was heavy granular on top of ice and it was very lumpy. Still had fun.

I actually fell right under that granite ridge that people jump off of once. All I could picture was my face being squished under some snowboarders board. But yea, I think I'm going to try summit at least when it's not icy, just have to try to initially take it from the right side (looking down) so I can slide over the big drop instead of pulling a Wiley Coyote right over the center.

Pluto's Plunge I think I could do, but I still like the wide side to side idea, and I'd feel bad getting in the way of the guys going down at a hundred miles an hour. :p

Yea, the steep end is where Milky Way starts. Wish they'd open that, it'd be fun be able to bounce back and forth. As green as Supernova is, it's fun to go over to build up confidence, and a nice long run.

Yea, but I'm scared to think what this weather is doing to Crotched right now. Was hoping for some snowt come down, it'd shweeeeet to have some natural snow to add to the base. B I suspect it's going to be crunchy for a while.

I guess it depends on what you are comfortable with...I'd rather handle the steeper pitch on Satellite Summit than the narrower section of Moon Walk. I usually just do more traversing on the steeper section if the discomfort factor goes up...

Hehe, see, the narrow doesn't bother me in the slightest becouse I can I can just wush back and forth and control myself. The falloff on Satellite Summit just screams a sprained ankle to me so far. :)

Once I do it and get it over with, I'll be fine. I'm just lacking confidence in myself when it comes to steep drop-offs. Maybee that dropoff isn't bad, but it LOOKS pretty nasty. :p
