Press Release ...

NEW HAMPSHIRE SKI RESORT GETS FIRST HIGH SPEED QUAD LIFT

Peak Resorts announces the acquisition of the high speed detachable quad chairlift formerly of Ascutney Mountain, VT. The installation of the lift, along with a terrain expansion is planned at Crotched Mountain, NH for the 2012-2013 season. This 3 million dollar capital investment will happen on the 10 year anniversary of the reconstruction of the resort.

We are very excited about the prospect of adding a detachable lift at Crotched Mountain. This lift will provide quick access to the summit, ultimately providing more value and vertical to our guests. Along with the lift, the addition of 25 acres of skiable terrain will be a significant upgrade for the resort.", said Jesse Boyd, VP of Operations for Peak Resorts.

While replacing the current Summit fixed grip lift, the only high speed quad lift in Southern NH will provide an uphill capacity of 2400 persons per hour, and access to an additional 25 acres of terrain in less than 4 minutes of time on the lift. The additional terrain access is accomplished by the extension of the current summit lift profile to the top of the mountain, approaching 1000 feet of vertical drop. The additional 25 acres of terrain will encompass three extra slopes and two glade areas. The new terrain will have 100 percent fan snowmaking coverage as well as being lit for night skiing.

"We at Crotched pride ourself on the commitment of service to all skiing and snowboarding guests from beginners all the way to expert terrain park and racing enthusiasts. The ability for us to provide the value of even more time on the slopes is very exciting. The expansion of terrain will benefit all of our clientele with an easier route off the top of the mountain and trails that will access our progressive terrain parks, glade skiing and allow us to stay committed to the ski racing culture of New Hampshire.", said Pat Terry, General Manager of Crotched Mountain.

Lift construction and trail development are scheduled to take place starting the spring of 2012 pending approval of permitting with NH State and local township regulations.

It's about time they extended the lift to the summit. I never liked the current summit setup.

Not crazy about it either but I read in other threads and forums discussing the current lift that the true summit can be a bit windy...hope they account for that when they install the HSQ.

Good to see them trying to expand there.

Nice.
Hopefully they have accounted for wind...however they do that, but the team there has done a pretty good job over the past few years, so I'll trust they've thought things through.

Interesting that Peaks is putting this HSQ at Crotched and not at Wildcat or even Attitash.

Wow, I really didn't see this coming. I never thought of Crotched as a good candidate for a high speed lift. The existing lift seemed sufficient for the vertical. Are they replacing the existing summit lift or having a parallel install? If replacing, where does the other lift go? I thought the reason they originally didn't go to the summit was lack of access to semi-easy terrain? This is a pretty big "oops" to be going back and redoing this now, just eight years or so after Crotched reopened.

Is there any other ski area in New England with less vertical that has a high speed lift? WaWa maybe but at least WaWa has the visits to justify. Unless Crotched blew up since I was last there on a weekend...

They might not be a good candidate for a HSQ, but they are a great fit for a USED High Speed quad at the right price. They are replacing the existing lift, which was installed on the cheap because that's what was available at the time (they got a lot of lifts from Ski Cherokee). Everyone knew it was a temporary solution as something would eventually go to the top again. It is a slow cold ride now that reminds me of Ram's Head at Killington (with the unused top).

Did you read the press release, it's been 10 years since they re-opened, lol.

I did some PM skiing over at Crotched last winter, they run a tight ship over there. A detach would definitely be a game changer.

yeah, it has been 10 years....The place is a hidden gem, after a thaw or non crystalline precipitation event, the place can get back to solid coverage in short time. In addition, they opened or allowed glades skiing at some spots, had a blast after some good dumps. Only tried the non groomed bumps once and equally had a good time.

High speed detachable is good in one sense maybe bad in another. Anyway good that they think the place warrants it.

Wow, ten years already, damn.

I'd like to know if they plan to address the terrain issue off the top. They didn't go to the top due to not having easier terrain off the summit. If this replaces the existing chair, it seems that they rethought that issue. Which makes sense to rethink, there is already a beginner and intermediate chair so not having a green circle or lower blue square off the summit shouldn't be that much of an issue.

Hey wait... didn't another ski area do something similar with their HSQ? :spin:

I would rather see them replace the summit triple at Attitash, but this is a good use of it as well. Makes Crotched look a bit more attractive than say a Pats Peak(Id still choose Pats).

Enjoy it, the revenue from my ski area in Ohio paid for it.

Why do you say "your" resort paid for it. Doesn't Peak have many resorts? Although I guess Boston Mills probably does do many skier visits being so close to Cleveland.
