So Ginn Co. is going to develope Burke into an upscale resort. Burke is on public land so they cannot make it private. Will they try to limit the public as much as possible? You bet they will. They are developing a 5000+ acre private ski resort near Vail. They have built and developed several upscale golf resorts arounfd the country, all private.

Haystack is bought to be developed into a private resort but with publically proclaimed "limited public" access. I don't think anyone knows exactly what that means yet.

Is this just two ski area's in a short time span or is a trend developing here? Private ski areas are not new, Bear Creek here in Vermont or YMC in Montana.

On one hand it's not a big deal maybe unless these hills are your home mountain. Currently, they represent a small part of the ski scene. But what about 10 years from now?

Here is an article in the BFP about the Burke thing.

they can't do anything to burke to limit public access. they can't even try it or else the state would come down on them hard. ginn has shown concern fol the local population, esp. BMA. of this i am not concerned.

the trend towards private ski areas will level off and maybe even correct itself. the market can only bare so much and there aren' a ton of millionaires to eat up all the real estate. i almost fear for ginn's future with burke if they can't sell the real estate.

Generally golf & skiing are two recreation activities that attract gainfully employed or wealthy persons and their families, there are exceptions of course. Private golf clubs and the private Ski Mountains will find & maintain their members accordingly. Based on what I’ve read to date, the development may not affect Burke Mountain ski operations any different than Stratton Mountain has been affected with its golf/tennis clubs and village square.

However if history is an indicator, by cashing out it will be the locals (who own undeveloped real estate parcels) that will change the area.
