No, its not some heavy metal concert, but tomorrow July 20th, is the hottest day of the summer climatologically.

From then on until the 30th, we are at thermal maximum, then it's downhill from there and on to winter and skiing, woooohooo :D :D

climatologically. Word of the year. Is it a real one?
It's recognized by Google on sites other than this one...does that make it real? :)

In any case, my home central A/C unit sure picked the best time of the year to die on me...

The peak cold, or dead of winter this year was January 28th, according to my local NWS office. We now enter a period of daily maximum and minimum temperatures starting tomorrow, and then trend downward after July 30th. This is from Accuweather.com averages for July for my area.

At least from a climatological (here I go again) standpoint of averages, the worst of the summer warmth is upon us.

It's interesting how the heat lag works, and how it takes so long to reach maximum or minimum averages after the solstice.

Austin, they come from the Beard&McKie sking: A Skiers Dictionary.

It is a parody of skiing book, that I have had for 15 years.

I keep changing them to make for good entertainment and I hope a few chuckles :p

Summer Skiing (my favorite):

It is possible to ski in the northern hemisphere during the warmer months, either on "dry" slopes covered with artificial skiing surfaces or on "grass" skis with wheels that permit ski-like motions on unaltered hillsides. However since neither of these is a satisfactory substitute for the real thing, many skiers have taken up golf, often playing at one of the excellent courses at ski areas.

Altough "the slopes" and "the links" may not appear to have much in common, they share a suprising number of features, a fact that no doubt explains the powerful attraction of golf to skiers:

- Expensive, cumbersome equiptment
- Tasteless, silly clothing
- Astronomical fees for daily outings
- Long waits due to crowds
- An awkward bent-knee stance and strange, illogical
- body-twisting movements.
- Baffling and contradictory instruction
- Mean spirited competition
- A reasonable risk of serious injury
- Frequent searches for lost things
- Unpredictable weather
- Tiresome Know-it-alls eager to impart advice

:p :D :) 8)

Ok, I just rechecked the average temperatures for New York. This is based on historical data:

First I should point out that there is enough data to remove anomalies in these tables of averages, at least when rounded to the nearest integer. If charted on a line chart, it would come to a smooth bell curve (actually a sin wave) with no spikes or canyons in the whole year.

* The average high temperature tops out at 86ºF, and that average high is for the dates July 23rd to July 25th, suggesting that the day with the average highest temperature is July 24th.

* The median temperature tops out at 78ºF, and that lasts from July 15th to August 4th, and the middle date in this range is July 25th..

Our average high maximum here (Islip) is 84, with a low of 67, and that is reached tommorow and continues until the 30th, when the average low drops to 66.

So if you wanted an average for the hottest day it could be the 25th, however the temperature remains at a constant average for several (10) days.

I wonder if the NWS is adjusting the averages for NYC, as the weather now is not at the same temperature profile as it was in 1869, when records started to be kept??
