I don't know about you but I find trying to guess a ski area based on a photo of a chairlift impossible. So I thought I would try it but using a diferent MO.

I am a ski resort in Vermont having opened in 1938 I live on the western side of the mountain. Two rope tows were bought from Suicide Six to start things rolling. The lifts do not reach the summit of the mountain. A popular event was the Lollipop Races.

I have had many diferent owners over the years, Catherine C.,John H. just to name a couple.

Joseph G. of bought the place in 1983.

After investing over 80 million into the resort Ascutney JG was forced to file for bankruptcy. The ski area then lay dormant for several years. For the past 12 years one family has owned the resort, New York bankers who bought the resort at auction.

In 1949 the ski area nearly went bankrupt due to poor snowfall but got a second chance when a reletive kicked in $5,000. A family season pass during this time was $45.

A couple trail names are Whispering Pines and Fifth Ave. Glades.

What ski area am I?

Man, I stink at this! You can see why I never became a game show host. Actually BobR nailed it originally. AlpineZoners are just too dang smart!

The interesting twist that peaked my interest was that Ascutney was owned by a major player with Merrill Lynch, went bankrupt in 1988, and the company was called Summit Ventures Inc.

Sugarbush is owned by a former major player with Merrill Lynch and his company is called Summit Ventures Inc.

I have the steepest inbounds trail in the world; 66 degrees. No picture of it exist on the internet, but because no one has ever been to me, no one can say the trail can't be that steep or people get pissed off that they're disrespecting me. Who am I?

Ascutney - just received their annual magazine / brochure. Are those trail names current ?
Got the info from the new brochure as well. It says these two trails were recut in 1983 so I assumed they are still there but you know what they say about assuming. Whispering Pines is on the new trailmap but can't find Fifth Ave. Bet Bob R knows.

In 1947, Skiing Hall of Fame member, Walt Schoenknecht, created me. The following winter he invented snowmaking, which is currently used at winter resorts throughout the world. What ski area am I?

We should put a disclaimer on this thread that no Googling is allowed....

Fifth ave was the wrap around trail from top to bottom. It was renamed after 1988. Sorry I have not looked at a trail map in years. It would be way off to the right off the old summit. Fleet Street and Thunder road would had been off it. Again trails have changed.
