Pretty Interesting discussion.............

Is it a sport or is it recreation. Like OSBMe said, does it matter. I think Glen might consider a descent like LG's Gargoyle or the Enfectchore glacier to be a bit more than recreation. But ultimately, I could careless what Glen thinks. When it comes down to competitive skiers, he really doesn't rate. He was not a world cup champ or even skier. He did not compete in World Extreme Ski championships, is not an IFSA skier etc. And are rag tag freestyle comps, as in Plake's day really a comp. Hardly so. So, if Glen thinks its all rec skiing. Fine. Glen will be long gone and the "sport" will continue..............And like Jim G said, mt climbing has few rules, no scores, but boy botch it and it is curtins...........just like big mountain skiing. Rec or not, skiing has consequences that can be pretty severe.

ask Emily Coombs or Chad VanderHam's parents about winning and losing in skiing......

No, the scorecard suggest competition, whether it's against others in your group, or yourself to improve your score. M-W.com's definition of sport is as follows:

So I guess based on that, skiing is a sport. This is a discussion of semantics really. Again, to me a sport suggests a competitive physical endeavor with clearly defined rules and some sort of scoring system to declare a winner.

Greg, real skiing can certainly have some losers. Check out Hans Sari, Alex Lowe, Doug Coombs, Chad VanderHam. Skiing doesn't need a scoring system. Come back in one piece, alive and you have won. You have spent the day outside, enjoying yourself, getting excellent physical exercise and the mental boost necessary from most of the week in doors. You are out in beautiful surroundings, often with friends and family, challenging yourself. If that isn't "winning" then I guess I really don't understand what the sport is about.

Give me a break.. first Glen Plake is an icon of the sport..Yes sport. Second I can't remember the last time I feared for my life skiing, although I don't ski at La Grave but according to you its not anymore dangerous then Killington:roll:

I agree...this guy was hucking WAY BACK when....plus he still rocks out like 210 straights through the bumps like his legs are the pistons of a race car.....I still think hes one of "the men".....of the SPORT..

Who would give a rats ass? Its almost as ridiculous as trying to figure out if skinning for turns is overrated.

Yeah but take a look at all the thread titles, most people won't give a rat's ass about half of them. They're just something to talk about that is ski related.

Plus it’s hard to come up with original ideas for threads that will get people to give their opinions especially in the summer.

How about you come up with some interesting threads that are relevant to this forum that everyone will care about that haven’t been discussed before?

0wn3d!

I personally appreciate all the creative threads HPD seems to be able to come up with. He's by far one of the best topic starters here. Thanks HPD!

I think HPD's thread here is just fine. I got involved in this one at first.

But then some of the responses to the topic got a little crazy. Skiing isn't a "death sport" anymore than it is just relaxing recreation.

Skiing is whatever the skier wants it to be. Wanna huck 100 footers and go for back surgery? Go for it! Want to spend all day on groomers making carves? Whatever pleases you! This is the true beauty of the SPORT.

So do me a favor...I won't tell anyone what kind of skiing is best and in return nobody should try to tell me how to define the word sport.

When I'm done at the end of the ski day, I look back at a day of sport. I don't have to keep score or know who won to feel that way.

Can't we just call it an "outdoor physical activity"? I have tons of those which are done for pleasure/exercise/challenge/accomplishment/maybe some friendly or unconscious competition ;)

So for those of you who agree with Plake, would think that Eastern Mountain Sports is a misnomer? Who's up for a camping competition? :D

Somehow "Eastern Mountain Outdoor Physical Activities" doesn't have quite the same ring to it...

don't get your panties in a bunch, I'm not giving you crap about the topic or the thread, hell, I even read most of it, my reply is my answer to the debate, not a shot at you, deep breathes are needed I think, but my god, are people really debating this, how about this for something constructive to add

where in wal-mart would i look for skiing equipment - the sport section, therefore it must be a sport, right?

don't worry about hpd, it's just the typical response from a wf/yankee fan. their panties are permanently bunched!

I just want to point out that hunting is competitive only if you're shooting at other hunters...I believe the proper name for that is war.

As opposed to shooting at targets which is a game that is competitive. But it isn't a sport.
