The person I’m referring to is a great guy in every respect, but he has this one shortcoming that kinda pisses me off. He can’t just say that someone else is a good skier. For example, if I’m riding a chair with him and below there is someone ripping down the zipper of a bump run he can’t bring himself to acknowledge it. When I point out the skiers obvious skills a typical comment would be, “I don’t think he’s that good, he’s sitting back on some turns”. I’ve pointed this out to him and to his credit he’s working on it. I just don’t get way some people think it some how diminishes their skills if they acknowledge someone else’s.:-?

i always enjoy watching other skiers from the lip and freely comment on visually pleasing displays. there are a lot of really good skiers around and it is always a pleasure to watch one ski.

I have met others like this too and I agree with the "insecure" assessment. like COIL I dig watching a good skier rip it up...and I will comment accordingly.

now ask me if I think I can ski with anyone, anywhere, of any skill level and ill tell you "hell yeah I can"...but thats my ego..I really do think I can though.. :D

In my opinion...if you cant put up...SHUT UP.

When I was younger and sucked I was one of those people. I would always shut down comments about other people being good skiers. Now that I'm a little older I hate people who do this because I realize I was just INSECURE about my own skiing skills (or lack thereof).

I'm kind of the complete opposite of this guy. I've often been told that I underestimate my skiing skills and always appreciate graceful skiers, especially those in the bumps.

Can't say that I know anybody like this. Anybody that refused to give somebody else credit for skiing well probably has other personality traits that wouldn't mesh well with mine... HPD - this guy is cool in every other respect? Kind of weird that this would be the one thing he would focus. Insecure for sure.

That's unfortunate that he's so critical.... the best way to learn to ski better is to watch other skiers. I attribute that to the progress I've made in just a few short years.. ski with better skiers, watch better skiers ...be a better skier !!

He's a real good guy and it's wierd cause he never has a bad word to say about anyone. He has no reason to be insecure about his skiing cause he's very skilled. He just throws around skiing complaments like they're man-hole covers.

This guy?

Watching others has been the number one way that I have learned to improve my skiing over the years. Copying good skiers, and trying not to do what obviously bad skiers do is an excellent way to learn. In fact, when I am teaching someone, I do point out the good and bad moves of skiers seen on the trails. It is not meant to put anyone down, rather, it is useful in helping a beginner or someone trying to improve to see obvious errors, or proper technique as they are working on their own.

I do have a friend like this. His critical nature is the main reason why we don't hang as much as we used to. Everyone matures at a different rate.

On the lift I always look for people ripping down the hill or showing great control. I tend to be a visual learner. I've yet to meet any AZers but this will be the year. I'm going to watch your technique like a hawk and ask a ton of questions. See ya'll at Sundown!

Nice to see others from Jersey, I live right on the border-line of andover and sparta (the andover side). Mountain Creek is not the best, but you can't beat going up for some night skiing when the place is essentially empty.

I cant see how people can be so critical of other just trying to go out and rip. Sure its fun to laugh at gapers but even still, at least theyre out enjoying the hill.

highpeaksdrifter;103661a typical comment would be said:
I've met more then one high-ranking PSIA instructor who is like that. (There was a period where I taught, so I had the opportunity to meet more then my share). They are just incapable of saying something nice. I got to the point with one of them that I took the assumption that if he didn't mention something (i.e., hand position for instance) then it must have been "good enough". i.e., the compliment was him not saying something. And that was my boss on the mountain!

Now I've never ridden a chairlift with an instructor who belittled somebody below; I can't really see any point or reason in doing that, other then insecurity. But in clinics? They, at times, were just head-shaking experiences of "what does it take to please this guy???".
