Sitting in philly today, with absolutely no snow, rain, and 60 degree weather i am dreaming of skiing (As Always). I think of my many ski trips i've taken, and although i love hittin up the big resorts - the Bush's and K-Marts of the world - I think back to where I learned to ski, and realize that the mom/pop places are the true essence of skiing. There is none of that commercial or amusment park feel that takes the purity out of skiing. A place where you can go to ski, and that is it, no mountain ambassadors or people constantly standing around checking trail maps and disney characters dressed up on skis. When I go to ski, the only thing I truly want to see is pow and more pow, with an absolutely uninterrupted line. There is nothing more aggrevating than spending a day of skiing where you are dodging gapers and marketing ploys. So I write this tread as a salute to the little guys out there, who keep skiing real and as a challenge for eveyone to visit them this year - as many are sweating bullets in finances. Keep true to your roots, we must keep these places alive. HELP THE LITTLE GUYS!

Thanks for the great post!
I work for a small ski area that I love. It's where I first learned to ski and it still has challenges that I have yet to tackle.
It's simple down to earth sking that everyone comes for, there are rarely lines, and everyone knows everyone else.

I work at Berkshire East Ski Area in Charlemont, MA. It's a great mountain with a 1180ft vertical drop, and a lot of really challenging terrain, that I feel is more challenging than many resorts in the east.
If you ever get a chance later in the season when there is a bit more snow, you should come out and check out our trails.
