While, weatherwise, the season's been pretty good this year, the first half of February is shaping up to be the driest in recorded history. From the NOAA Albany office today:
Hopefully the second half of the month will prevent this Feb from becoming a record setter altogether.
...THE FIRST HALF OF FEBRUARY 2009 HAS BEEN THE
DRIEST ONE SINCE 1980 WITH ONLY 0.07 INCHES RECORDED THUS FAR. FEB
1980...WE ACTUALLY HAD NO MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION THROUGH THE FIRST
TWO WEEKS OF THE MONTH BUT FINALLY GOT 0.62 INCHES (INCLUDING 8
INCHES OF SNOW) ON THE 16TH. IF WE DO NOT GET ANY PRECIPITATION
THROUGH TUESDAY THE 17TH (A GOOD BET FROM THIS VANTAGE POINT)...THIS
WOULD MAKE THIS THE DRIEST FIRST 17 DAYS OF ANY FEBRUARY OFFICIALLY
IN ALBANY SINCE WAY BACK IN 1912! THAT FEBRUARY SAW NO MEASURABLE
PRECIPITATION UNTIL THE 19TH BUT THEN ENDED UP WITH 1.56
INCHES...BELOW NORMAL...BUT NO WHERE NEAR OUR TOP TEN DRIEST
FEBRUARY MONTHLY RECORDS. INCIDENTALLY OUR DRIEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD
WAS IN 1987 WHEN ONLY 0.24 INCHES FELL...MOST OF WHICH TOOK PLACE ON
FEB.4TH.
Hopefully the second half of the month will prevent this Feb from becoming a record setter altogether.
