East Mountain

Although I inserted this question in a previous thread, I want to see if I can get an answer by posting it under it's own heading. I found the name of the Mountain which sits opposite the central Vt. valley from Killington on a map. When leaving the K. >>village<< on that section of hiway where Rt. 100 and 4 converge, I noticed that it seems people have been clearing trails and skiable terrain on East Mountain which can be viewed going south. It looks to me that there is a limited access (no lifts, no ticket charge, no pavement) ski area there. Can anyone elaborate?

I'm not sure which side of the road as you head south you are talking about. If it is on the west side, then this could be the remnants of Killington's Sunrise section which has been abandoned and converted into a snowmobile center.

Other than that, Bear Creek, the exclusive ski club, is in that neck of the woods on the east side of Route 100 S. www.bearcreek.com

It could be related to their operations or maybe the snowmobile operations in that area.

If you're talking about the East Mountain that rises above the Ottauquechee River valley, I know it's not any type of ski area. Might be logging. Might be locals doing some things. With a relatively low elevation (1,200-2,800'), I'm not sure the snow would be that great anyway once you get lower than the first 800 verts or so.

It would be logical to think that East Mountain would be on the East side of the valley, wouldn't it? If I gave you the impression I thought this was >>any kind of a ski area<<, you're right. If the locals (I suspect the Green Mtn. College set) have been active up there cutting back country trails and skiing, the access would be somewhat secret. You would have to take advantage of a local situation to ski a lower elevation, but in a good snow year, that kind of area would definitely be skiable. I'm not sure if it is East Mountain, but if you are driving down the state hiway keep your eyes on the Mountain chain (yes, to the east), you will see what I am inquiring about. It's a small cirque, wooded with down chutes and a few clearings.

If you are skinning up and skiing down, the top 800 Vert would be plenty. I suspect that This area which sits on the top ridge could be accessed by ski mobile or x-c trail skiing. Then the climb to the top could serve some excellent runs at the right time. :p
