Elk charges full winter price and they opened up 3 days ago with 10 trails. They said if they had 3 open they charge less. So tomorrow they will not charge me anything because I will go some where else.

- yea but considering their location 10 trails, 3 lifts and 2" of fresh snow overnight isn't bad for early season and sure, discounted tix help, but they gotta stay in business right? It's not like they can bank on the same number of natural snow days as your favorite hill in Roxbury or their competitor to the north.

Anyway, lets hope the cold trend continues and the warmups are short lived!

Got my $25 demo day ELK Winterfest tix on Wednesday! Will you and Mr Corn be there?

Good point about the prices. I don't know if Cornhead is going. I would love to but work in retail business and my boss doesn't allow us to use personal time from Black Friday to X Mas. Have fun at winter festival. And maybe I make some turns with you at on a another time.

The only reason I've never been to Elk despite all the wonderful accolades i've heard is the fact that they dont discount lift tickets.

I mean, I CANT go to a PA resort for full price when it's about the same drive to a Catskills resort. Or even just slightly more to go to Vermont. This is one marketing area where I think they are WAY off base in terms of business. IMO, they'd do a heckuva lot better if they issued at least a moderate number of BOGOs and promotions etc....., that's what it will take to get me to try them out.

I drive 2.5h to Elk because it's the best and really the only day trip option for me coming from Philly.

Would be fun to meet up with some AZ'ers.

They have two "Winterfest" days each year $25 lift tickets, 1/10, 1/24. There always on a Friday, and you've got to get a voucher at certain ski shops. I live right in the middle of Elk and Greek Peak and would alternate season passes if Elk didn't cost over double GP's. I usually hit at least one Winterfest day. I skied Elk four times last year. Though not ethical, I've bought a half day pass, and skied all day on it without issues.

elk's owned by a rich old guy who is content with the business as-is...on one hand i hate paying full-rip for ticket, but on the other the distance and cost keeps the crowds down which is a plus...i come from the south, so it's the best option for me as a day trip...i have in the past, when i was in night school, taken advantage of the $20 student wednesdays...that is easily their best deal

Agreed. I went to a Winterfest last year, and it's a really good deal. The only downside is that you can only buy the tickets ahead of time at certain ski shops.

I'd like to go to both Winterfests this year. If anyone else is planning on going, I'd greatly appreciate some help with the tickets. None of the shops are anywhere near my house.

Come on, if you live in Manhattan, you should be used to paying full price for everything. Seriously, it's worth going for something different. Go when it's full open, though. Not worth it otherwise. It's got a friendly vibe and they do have a couple of good bump trails. Grooming is top notch. Lifts are slow but that keeps the slope crowding down.

FYI, all this info is from at least 5 years ago...

This comment bothers me, and I don't even live in the city... It's the misconception that everyone who lives around here is rich. Anyway, while Elk does have it's merits, when it IS ON its quite likely NOT the best option from this region.

Elk is nice for different place to go when snow fall is comprised. I like that I can get their in under 2 hours. I probably go a few times this year. It be cool to take turns with others if we happened to set up a weekend or holiday day at Elk I go. I will not use my very limited personal time to go to Elk unless they get a foot plus of powder snow.so most likey no winter festival for me.

Give Danziesen & Quigley in Cherry Hill NJ a call and ask if they can send them to you. Iirc D&Q also offers a ELK winterfest bus trip option.
When i got my tickets at Buckman's this past week i was told the tix just came in and they'd expect to sell out by the weekend. D&Q usually doesn't sell out as fast as Buckmans, probably due to the South Jersey location, still i wouldn't dilly dally around with it.
Let me know how you make out.

It's hard to justify the trip to Elk when the Catskills are the same distance. I've been there a few times, and I liked the atmosphere, the lack of crowds, and all the pine trees they planted, but it'll probably remain just a place to visit once to say you did for me.

From Jersey/NYC it doesn't really make any sense to go to Elk unless your group is pretty low-level, and even then the Catskills are going to be better.

But it's a good option for Scranton/Binghamton, and if you're in PA in general it's also more realistic to pick over the Catskills, as it's still far closer.

Depends where in Jersey. Elk is about half the distance than the Cats for me.
